I became a math major because I couldn't imagine school without doing mathematics. I've worked with students who feel exactly the opposite: they can't imagine enjoying school when "doing" mathematics is part of the equation. In my eight years of teaching (Pre-algebra through Precalculus) and 16 years of tutoring (Pre-algebra through Calculus as well as Integrated Math 1-3 as part of the Common Core Curriculum), I've discovered that many students who just didn't "get math," achieved understan... I have taught and tutored high school and middle school math since 1976 and taught math at Granite Oaks Middle School up until retiring in June 2016. There are four components to my tutoring: 1. Concepts and Skills: help students understand the concepts behind what they are learning and give them practice on the skills they need to become mathematically fluent. 2. Accuracy, Organization, and Efficiency: help students organize their work and become accurate and efficient problem solvers. ... [more]

With over 30 years of experience teaching every possible public high school math course, I have learned so many "tricks of the trade" that have helped many of my students excel. This includes helping my students learn how to successfully manage the taking of tests like the ACT. In the process, my students usually overcome any fear of math and come to appreciate the wonderful applications in real life. "Why study mathematics?" and "How will I ever understand this stuff?" are two of the most real and common questions I am asked when students, along with their parents, ask me to help. I am a 2015 Del Oro graduate and have finished one year at BYU Provo. Through my high school and college experience I have come to love math and to love helping others with it. I did my BSc. in Physics, Math and Chemistry (major) and received a Master?s Degree in Organic Chemistry from Banaras Hindu University, India. I have more than five years of teaching experience. Teaching is a path where I love to share my knowledge and passion for science with students just being introduced to the subject. I treat a math problem as a puzzle and I work with my students as long as they build a strong base on that topic. I feel like Chemistry is very systematic; if you un... [more]
