I've tutored Algebra 1 for the last 5+ years at the Harlem Children's Zone and with private students throughout Manhattan. I'm currently working with several 8th and 9th grade students who are prepping for the Regents exam in June. Algebra 1 will be the foundation of much of their high school and college math, and so it's particularly rewarding to help students develop a strong grasp of the material and an appreciation for the patterns and interrelationship that make Algebra so exciting. ***UPDATE: I will be relocating to Ann Arbor, MI in late June; I am now taking requests for lessons after J [more]

I am a retired Engineer who has tutored for the better part of 2 decades in Middle School, High School and some college level math courses, including algebra. I explain a concept in a way the student can grasp it, do a problem or two with them, have them do a problem or two, and then have them teach me how to do one to ensure they have it down before moving on. I have tutored students ages middle school to mid 60s going after a degree; with great success. Hi! My name is Tracy. I love tutoring kids and adults in Math. I am a retired Engineer (from Ford Motor Company) and an Engineering grad [more]

The essence of my teaching philosophy is to engage each and every student so that each ultimately attains a solid understanding of the course material. I strive to have every student develop the analytical and quantitative skills required to become successful practitioners of the subject matter taught. A key aspect of my teaching style is to clearly bridge from one concept to another while stressing connections between concepts and how a given concept embeds in a broader context. I also li... Algebra 1 is key to having success in 8th grade or into high school. It is very systematic and involves sequential steps in order to solve equations. Slope, intercepts, functions, graphing, manipulating equations, and other skills are what makes the subject very interesting. There are several tricks that can help remember esp. when dealing with slope. I have learned a lot of the tricks and they seem to work! I have 12 years of teaching experience. I will work with student and make contact with the teacher if the parent wishes to make sure the student is learning to the teacher's expectati [more]

I have been tutoring in algebra the longest. I have at least one or two students per year who need help in this subject. My standard method is to work on homework together, go over tests and quizzes, and to be sure to do chapter reviews before all tests. A former student of mine said, "Maggie is such an enthusiastic and dependable tutor. She helped me with my AP coursework and college prep my senior year of high school. Maggie always finds ways to make schoolwork relatable to your life, and that's what makes studying with her so fun. My tutoring sessions with Maggie still pay off today, as man [more]

I have been tutoring since I was in high school in the 1960s. I tutored throughout college. In my 35 years of public and private school teaching, I worked individually with my students before, during and after school. It was always my favorite part of teaching. I have recently retired and would like to help you understand math and/or physics so that you can learn to love it as much as I do. With my decades of experience, I am very good at making students feel comfortable with me. Because of... [more]

I completed Algebra 1 in the 7th grade. Afterwards, I have gone on to take many more math courses up to and through Calculus III. But all further math is based on the foundation of Algebra, with which I am extremely familiar. I have frequently taught algebra in the schools when I substitute teach, so I am familiar with many of the misconceptions that students have when it comes to this subject. I have been working as a substitute school employee for a little over 17 years and as a tutor with WyzAnt since 2011. While I specialize in Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, and Precalculus, I have also taught reading comprehension and writing to a wide variety of students, some who are just beginning their education and others who are either continuing their education in college or seeking a GED. A number of students over th [more]
