While many of us may be unaware of it, we use algebra in our lives on a daily basis. For adults, we may be unaware of the presence of algebra because we have internalized the processes and forgotten the names of the steps. But for younger students, algebra seems to be an abstract foreign language. The key to success is illustrating the concepts in a way that links the processes to meaningful situations.
