My years of experience working with students who struggle with math comes down to one word: listen. I don't talk at students, I listen to them "think out loud" as they explain how they approach a problem. It's by listening that I can really understand where a student needs help, then present the student with similar problems as we work through that challenge. My whole approach to teaching can be summed up by a quote from Albert Einstein: "Imagination is More Important than Knowledge." I teach for long-term retention of concepts - not short term retention of facts. In today's connected world, t [more]

Algebra 1 is the course in which (among other things): -equations with unknowns are written and solved formally. -systems of two equations are written and solved. -the coordinate plane is explored, and used to plot data and lines. -slope is introduced, and explained as a rate of change and a characteristic of a line. -the concept of a function is explored. -variable expressions are manipulated in increasingly sophisticated ways. The meat of Algebra 1 is its body of skills, which require lots of practice: solving for an unknown, writing the equation for a line, and so on. The list of essential [more]

Algebra was my favorite subject in school. I even remember my high school Algebra I teacher, Mrs. White. She created in me a love for Algebra and I get that same joy when I am able to help students master this subject. Even though I am a Chemistry major, Math was my minor, and I had to take everything from Basic Math to Calculus. I believe one-on-one tutoring in Algebra can make all the difference in the world. I tutor many subjects on a regular basis, but get the most practice in Algebra I, II, and Pre-Algebra. [more]
