Algebra I is where I began to actually understand math as a communication skill. After years of struggling with number concepts, the nature of algebra forced me to look at math from non-traditional views which enhanced my understanding. This non-traditional learning and years of tutoring have given me a unique quality in tutoring algebra, particularly for those who are not "math oriented." I have my undergraduate degree in History, and my graduate degree in Secondary Education with five years professional tutoring experience and teaching certificates in three states for social studies from g [more]

Algebra 1 was the first subject I tutored, 17 years ago. I still enjoy helping understand the language of algebra. Because, that is what algebra is, a new language of mathematics. This is why it can be so scary. I have tutored algebra for 17 years, 12 as a tutor for local colleges and privately, 5 years as a teacher. With all of my experience I have not lost my enthusiasm for teaching, nor my understanding of difficulties in this first foray into modern mathematics. I hope that you can learn a little of my love of it as well. [more]

I really enjoy helping students reach their goals. Your goal may be "getting" math. Or doing better on a hard test than you ever have before. Or improving your English. We set up a plan just for you. You can measure your success along the way. You may need to meet twice weekly, or only for a few se... [more]

My approach to tutoring is informed by my past academic struggles. When I was a freshman at Princeton, I quickly realized that my high school, located in an economically depressed area in south Texas, had not adequately prepared me for the diverse range of college coursework. Having had to overcome that, I know the frustration and self-defeating strategies--like procrastination--that students often develop and I am especially sensitive to supporting my students. Sometimes that means being ... [more]
