Following high school I thought I would never use math much, but to my surprise launching missiles involved quite a bit. Using basic math (algebra 2, trigonometry, etc.) to do my job calculating course speed and range daily for ten years followed by more advanced math in college pursuing my Electrical Engineering degree. Summary: I enjoy helping others succeed (more than myself at times). Despite missing just two questions on the SAT, I decided to enlist in Navy. They tried to convince me to be a nuclear technician but I like myself radiation free - thank you very much. Living the dream i [more]

I am a 6-12 highly qualified math teacher. Unlike most other math teachers, I was not good in math until Algebra One in ninth grade. I had an understanding, patient, and tremendously good teacher and since then, well... the world of math has been mine! Intending to teach for one year between engineering jobs, fourteen years later, I'm still teaching and my students experience a world of investigation and discovery. I am a licensed 6-12 mathematics teacher in Virginia with twelve years teaching Algebra One, eight years teaching Geo... [more]

Out of all of the subjects that I tutor, algebra 2 is my favorite. It is the foundation for all of your subsequent math courses. I have taught algebra to high school students, as well as to college students in developmental math and college algebra. I have also helped many students with understanding the algebra problems that appear on the Accuplacer, ACT, ASVAB, AFOQT, SAT, and TEAS exams. I graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in Mathematics from Christopher Newport University. I earned departmental honors for having the highest GPA in the Math department. As an undergraduate, I was a math [more]

I have an undergraduate degree in English from the U.S. Naval Academy as well as experience in English tutoring, particularly in writing (organization, fluency, clarity, grammar, etc.). I'm one of those people who tend to love learning, and for whom a lot of academic things come pretty easily. I earned straight A's in every class I took in high school, including AP/IB courses, scored in the 99th percentile on the SAT and around the 85th percentile on the GRE. I earned a B.A in History after four years of writing lots of papers at the College of William & Mary, and also went through the great education program there. I have ten years full-time teaching experience at a loca... [more]

A child's success in Algebra 2 hangs on how well s(he) understands Algebra 1 from two years before. Many students forget algebra concepts and need to relearn. Others had poor instruction when they took Algebra 1, and now are totally lost in this second year of the math. Too many Algebra 2 teachers do not review enough the previous algebra skills; some teachers do not review at all. It is confusing to students when they get increasingly low scores and feel lost in Algebra 2. They feel at fault and overwhelmed, when, in fact, I've repeatedly found that review and confidence-building will tu [more]
