I took the CBEST as part of joining the Santa Clara Teacher Credentialing program and passed without studying on the first try. I regularly tutor almost all of its topics at an equal or higher level than they are presented in the exam. Tutoring is an act of observation. It succeeds where normal instruction fails because it is geared toward a student's particular strengths. My best experiences as a tutor have been with the students who needed me most, learning how they needed to learn. I have been a tutor in one setting or another since childhood. As an undergraduate I was a teacher's assi [more]

Contents of CBEST include: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and formulas. Actually problems in the "formulas" category are formulas taken from the previous three categories. Problems from the "algebra" category are taken only from algebra 1. So there are actually three categories in CBEST. In light of the above categories, CBEST is less complicated than SAT tests because SAT requires more than CBEST. The latter has problems taken from algebra 2 and some introductory trigonometry, which are subjects beyond algebra 1. Since I am certified for tutoring SAT at WyzAnt, I should be certified for tut [more]

I took the CBEST in 2013, and I passed all three sections--Reading, Math, and Writing. It will be fun coaching others to pass, now that I am acquainted with the test contents and the testing conditions. The writing section involves composing two separate essays under time constraints, so I recommend some forethought and practice; and I have considerable experience teaching writing. I have worked with students of all ages and levels, from preschool through graduate school. While I have expertise in teaching reading, literature, writing and creative writing, I also have experience in tutoring ma [more]

I have current experience coaching essay writing. This is the main skill needed for the CBEST Writing portion. I have current mathematics teaching for the areas of math on the CBEST. Also, I've passed the rigorous CSET Math 1 and 2 which covers the algebra, geometry, and other math on the CBEST. The Reading comprehension portion of the CBEST requires textual analysis. My Master's degree work contained a significant bulk of textual analysis and comprehension. Anecdotally, having passed the CBEST at my first try without the use of a guidebook or tutor and having been a substitute teacher o [more]

I have over 10 years of experience helping students prepare for all sections of the CBEST. My background in standardized test prep - SSAT, ACT, SAT, GRE, and GMAT - is extensive. With the math section, I find many adults need a solid refresher of the fundamentals of number properties, algebra, and geometry. A friend once commented to me that my success as a tutor is due to the fact that I am, "a Renaissance man in the age of specialization." In other words, I can tutor most subjects K-12, I speak French and Portuguese fluently and have an intermediate Spanish level, and I am highly experienced [more]

I believe I'm qualified to teach CBEST preparation because I have passed successfully many courses in obtaining my undergraduate BA degree, my MA degree and my teaching credential. As an elementary teacher for 13 years and specialty teacher in elementary, intermediate school, and high school I have attained all the skills I believe prepare me quite sufficiently for preparing a student to take the CBEST. As a WyzAnt tutor for three years as well as mathematics CBEST tutor for a high school teacher planning on taking the CBEST I also believe I'm quite specially qualified. [more]

I took the CBEST on 08/21/10 and achieved a total passing score of 217. Specific section scores include: Reading - Scaled Score: 77; Mathematics - Scaled Score: 65; Writing - Scaled Score: 75. I have helped students pass courses and standardized tests for the past 15 years, tutoring students in suburban private schools, urban public schools, Ivy League college students and everyone in between. In addition to tutoring, I have been teaching middle and high school math and science full-time for 14 years, and before grad school at Cornell, I taught in Bolivia as a Peace Corps Volunteer. I have just retired from teaching in California after 22 years, having passed the CBEST myself. In addition, I worked for several years as a Mentor teacher on various projects. As well, I served as a BTSA Mentor for first- and second-year teachers who were fulfilling their clear-credential requirements. I have also worked as an Alameda County Mentor for an intern teacher who was working and studying simultaneously. All this serves me well for CBEST-based knowledge and experience. With the 2010-2011 school year, Mr. P celebrated his twentieth year as a teacher with the Alameda Unified Schoo [more]

I hold a PhD in English and I have taught English writing and reading comprehension and composition at the university level for over six years, which qualify me to help students successfully prepare for and pass both the Reading and Writing sections of the CBEST. Furthermore, my knowledge of mathematics up to Pre-Calculus easily enables me to help my students prepare for the Math section of the CBEST. I have successfully tutored adults preparing for the CBEST. I have passed the CBEST myself, scoring a near perfect on all three sections. [more]
