The best way to know how to do it is having done it yourself. I have taken and passed the CBEST and can help you prepare for the test tailored to your individual needs. Having taken a variety of tests during the course of study for my graduate degrees, I have developed helpful strategies for test taking that I am glad to share. What I bring to my students: I have been a coach for many years and worked with students of all ages and skill levels. I tutor English and German, teach ESL, and coach students in their test preparation (GRE, SAT, ACT, EPPP, CBEST). Study strategies include time man [more]

To gain State of California teaching certification, sitting for the CBEST is a requirement. I passed the test on my first attempt. To help me help you: 1. I studied for and passed the CBEST test myself. For the math portion: I understand the importance of learning to estimate. For the writing portion: I understand the importance of creating a well-thought-out outline before writing. For the reading section: I understand the importance of the process of elimination. All of these skills I plan on passing on to my students. Kathryn is a professional private tutor who spends her life helping students understand tough concepts in math and science. She is an aficionado of these subjects herself, having spent a rigorous four years at Harvey Mudd Co [more]

One of my former students was preparing for the CSET (California Subject Examinations for Teachers). I helped her, especially with the math section, so that she successfully passed her exam in July 2013. In so doing, I helped her overcome a long-term condition of dyscalculia. I have been tutoring all levels of Math for the past 10 years, from Algebra through college Calculus. I believe that establishing a good foundation in Mathematics is critical for a student?s future success and confidence ? in high school, in college and beyond in their careers. And I believe every student has the poten [more]

Contents of CBEST include: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and formulas. Actually problems in the "formulas" category are formulas taken from the previous three categories. Problems from the "algebra" category are taken only from algebra 1. So there are actually three categories in CBEST. In light of the above categories, CBEST is less complicated than SAT tests because SAT requires more than CBEST. The latter has problems taken from algebra 2 and some introductory trigonometry, which are subjects beyond algebra 1. Since I am certified for tutoring SAT at WyzAnt, I should be certified for tut [more]

I took the CBEST in 2013, and I passed all three sections--Reading, Math, and Writing. It will be fun coaching others to pass, now that I am acquainted with the test contents and the testing conditions. The writing section involves composing two separate essays under time constraints, so I recommend some forethought and practice; and I have considerable experience teaching writing. I have worked with students of all ages and levels, from preschool through graduate school. While I have expertise in teaching reading, literature, writing and creative writing, I also have experience in tutoring ma [more]

As a California teacher with 2 credentials, I passed the CBEST the first time I took it, and with 'flying colors'. My strategies for teaching students to pass this test include using practice tests (one at a time), correcting it, and focusing on the areas that the person is the weakest. I teach how to outline for the essay and what kinds of details to include in their paragraphs, learning math formulas, clues in grammar, and how to pick out the meaning and details in a passage. I have a positive attitude, and a light sense of humor. Students need constructive feedback, positive reinforcemen [more]

I believe I'm qualified to teach CBEST preparation because I have passed successfully many courses in obtaining my undergraduate BA degree, my MA degree and my teaching credential.
