University level Music Theory, Ear Training, Sight Singing

I taught freshman and sophomore ear training at the university level for four years: two years at BYU and two years at U of U. I also prepared high school students for the ear training portion of the AP music theory exam for two years at High School. I'm passionate about helping students build their minds through music! I have been teaching through Wyzant since the start of this year and I have loved the students I have met from all over the country. A little about my background: After earning Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Music composition, I earned a PhD in 2011 at the University of [more]

Patient, Passionate, Polite K-6 Tutor and 7-12 Study Skills Tutor

At an early age, I began singing in a church choir, took piano lessons and could read music singing correct notes quite easily. In 4th grade, I learned how to play the violin which required very careful listening, ear training skill in order to play accurately. Throughout my life, I have played the piano, or been singing in a choir or performing group. As a result, I have the ability to teach and help others learn and develop good ear training skills. I have been a tutor with WyzAnt now for over 6 years, and would like to continue in order to help students succeed. I love working with children [more]

5+ years Professional Voice Teacher & Performance Coach

I use individualized vocal exercises and patterns with cause and effect teaching to help students match pitch and strengthen muscle coordination. We practice interval drills and work on strengthening vocal technique so vocalizing becomes easier and second-nature. We work with chords, scales, and progressions to not only train melody line, but also ear training for more advanced students requiring the use of harmonies such as: choirs, duets, musical theater, back-up singers, and other group singing. Where Words Fail, Music Speaks

As well as teaching piano for two years, I also teach students to play melodies by ear. I start by asking them to pick a song that they know and love. I will then play a small part of the melody of the song that they want to learn with a book covering the keys in which I am playing. Once I have done that, I ask them to play back what they heard from my playing. Once they have learned that small part, I move on to the next part and repeat until they have learned the whole song. I then incorporate the same method with the left hand. Pretty soon, they have a song learned by ear that they ca [more]

Fun and Knowledgeable Piano Instructor and Composer

I took two years of sight-singing and ear-training in college. I've been participating in choir since I was 12 which applies this knowledge. I've been playing the piano for over 20 years and participated in several jazz ensembles which require improvisation - being able to hear chords, melodies and such is required to do so. I have been playing the piano since I was eight years old. I outgrew my local teachers by age 12, then continued to learn/play on my own until I was of age to attend college. I continued my study of the piano for three more years while pursuing a music education degree. W [more]
