As an ex H.S. Math teacher I am obviously versed in math from the rudiments onward. What is not so obvious is that when I began tutoring 10 years ago I was also trained in the methods of teaching young students these rudiments through the use of manipulatives and objects including "things", number cards, Cuisenaire rods, touch math, tables, flashcards, etc. I interact with the child to find "where they are", what interests them and how we can use this information to best help the child learn the math necessary for his/her age/grade level (and beyond). Elementary math is the first time you can get kids excited about math and inspire them to be confident in doing it. In the monotony of endless homework problems, kids often forget why they're doing it, but I work with them to make it fun. As an engineering program manager for 15 years, and with an MIT degree to boot, I know my fair share of math and science, having taken Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology AP II. It all started when my algebra teacher sent me to math camp and entered me into a geometry contest the next year, which I got a perfect score on all rounds. Proofs are my specia [more]

I have been an elementary teacher both in the United States and at international schools around the world for 12 years. I began my teaching career teaching 5th grade in Brooklyn, New York and have since taught grades 2-5. This fall, I will begin teaching first grade. I love this career and working with students. Tutoring is rewarding because I am able to get the time to personalize learning for students that I don't necessarily always get in the classroom. I have experience teaching... [more]
