Working with children and helping them become the best they can be has been a lifelong dream of mine. I grew up the son of an amazing elementary school teacher, so teaching has been in my blood for as long as I can remember. After graduating from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY with a 3.9 GPA and degree in Elementary Education, I began my own teaching career. I have served as a general education teacher, mathematics support teacher, and library/media specialist in various schools in both u... [more]

Teaching Elementary Math is more complicated because of the common core requirements but the value with using this process is that is very standardized between all the schools and it does work. For many parents that have not had the exposure, the common core can be overwhelming. When we couple this with a child that is struggling, it becomes very stressful. My goal is to alleviate the stress of both the child and the parent. Once the stress starts to fade away, the benefits of the common core kick in and kids become much stronger at Math. [more]

***My Experience*** In my 10+ years as an educator and tutor I've worked one-on-one with dozens of students on test prep (SAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, GRE, GMAT, and Regents), academic subject support (math, physics, chemistry, and Spanish), writing, and college application coaching. My students range in age from 10 to 50 and come from diverse educational backgrounds. I graduated magna cum laude in English from Harvard University, and I have a master's degree from Columbia University, wher... [more]

I came to Elementary Math tutoring the old-fashioned way: learning on the job. I was originally a history and English tutor (and I still do that), but later I became a general homework helper for all subjects, including math and science. The key to teaching elementary math is to always remember what it felt like as a child, when math can seem scarier than it is. Everything comes down to history for me. I've been a history geek for my my entire life (or at least since age 4, since I don't remember my life before that). My idea of fun is to read history (currently on Robert Caro's biography of L [more]

The way basic math is being taught these days simply doesn't work. Each student learns in unique ways, and the standards established by most math curricula have significant shortfalls. The basic quantitative and number reasoning skills are absolutely critical. While it is true that calculators can perform the operations required of students, fostering quantitative reasoning and numerical instinct is a crucial goal for maximizing long term opportunities. Education is my passion. I naturally love to learn, challenge myself, and help others do the same. I earned a B.A. in Psychology then began teaching Middle School English. You would think this career choice and degree were unrelated, but it's actually all that kept the middle schoolers from driving me crazy! While teaching, I earned a B.S. in the Biological Sciences and earned a biotechnology certificate afterwards. During this period, I also kept up a healthy volunteer pastime teaching a w... [more]

My first degree was in Natural Science with a Master's in Forensics. Since then I have worked in the field and switched to Nursing which I currently do full-time. Going back to school has reinforced how important it is to have an engaging and experienced teacher. I began tutoring over 10 years ago for a desire to see children improve their schoolwork. I saw firsthand a decrease in the satisfaction of students and parents alike with the teaching within the school system. Every session ... [more]

I have tutored a great number of hours of elementary math for kindergarten through fifth grade. I teach this material through patient and repetitive explanations, allowing students many opportunities within a single lesson to learn the same material. When appropriate, I explain the solution to an answer in multiple ways, and by providing options I make it clear to the child that he/she can do this, one way or another! I'm currently a premedical post-baccalaureate student at Columbia University. I attended high school in Westchester County, New York, where I was inducted into the National Hon [more]
