I have been tutoring for 15 years and have had many opportunities to work with students on Common Core Mathematics. I have had the pleasure of sharing their joy as their knowledge and understanding grew. I passionately enjoy mathematics and love sharing that enthusiasm with others. The way basic math is being taught these days simply doesn't work. Each student learns in unique ways, and the standards established by most math curricula have significant shortfalls. The basic quantitative and number reasoning skills are absolutely critical. While it is true that calculators can perform the operations required of students, fostering quantitative reasoning and numerical instinct is a crucial goal for maximizing long term opportunities. *** I ONLY HAVE 2 SPOTS LEFT FOR NEW STUDENTS UNTIL NOVEMBER 2017. I believe every student has the potential to excel in academics, once the child's learning style is identified. As a tutor, my unique approach lies in the ability to dissect key concepts so students can first grasp the fundamentals on which they will successfully build the skills necessary to master the subjects they struggle with. My philosophy is that no one is a failure seeing my belief is that, "failure is success turned inside out" and I have proven this by patiently working with each in... [more]

I came to Elementary Math tutoring the old-fashioned way: learning on the job. I was originally a history and English tutor (and I still do that), but later I became a general homework helper for all subjects, including math and science. The key to teaching elementary math is to always remember what it felt like as a child, when math can seem scarier than it is. Everything comes down to history for me. I've been a history geek for my my entire life (or at least since age 4, since I don't remember my life before that). My idea of fun is to read history (currently on Robert Caro's biography of L [more]
