Fortran is one of the oldest and still widely used computer programming language used in scientific computing. I learned and used FORTRAN programming language in my MSC study in Physics for numerically solving atomic and molecular calculations. I also used FORTRAN for dealing with matrices to solve for eigenvalues, to find inverse of a matrix, etc... I also use FORTRAN in my PhD study. I learned FORTRAN 64 back in 1968 using punched cards on an IBM 360 environment. During that summer, I designed a payroll processing application that did process the pay and paychecks for a company that had approx. 350 employees. I heard that the system was used until 1974 when new technology was used. I never used FORTRAN since then. FORTRAN was one of first languages (along with GW Basis). In recent years, I had to use FORTRAN again because of the number of Scientific computing library that use. I am more comfortable with more "modern" dialects of FORTRAN (FORTRAN 77) that support variable scope and functions etc. American culture has a hang-up about math. Many believe success in mathematics centers on talent, but in fact (and there is research to show this) motivation and effort are really the keys to success.
