I'm an experienced, retired New York City public high school teacher. I've taught AP United States and European History, and have been a table reader for both exams--I've actually graded the essays for the College Board. This experience gives me a broader insight into the tests and how to prepare for them than many other teachers. I have also taught regular Regents level courses in United States History and Government and Global History and Geography. My test results have been excellent! ... [more]

I started out as a history buff before I learned geography. It's rather difficult to learn history without picking up on geography as well. Starting with history means that you don't just learn where countries are on a map -- you also learn what geography means for people around the world. For example, why do most large empires start in river valleys, and almost none in mountains? And why are there exceptions to that, like the Incas? Everything comes down to history for me. I've been a history geek for my my entire life (or at least since age 4, since I don't remember my life before that). My [more]
There is a common misconception that geography is an outdated or useless array of facts that no longer has to be memorized because of the advent of computers and answers-on-demand provided by the internet. The subject is done no service by the way it is treated in school. Knowledge of history and the entire human drama require knowledge of geography that extends beyond a list of capital cities. Geography shapes our culture and our lives continually, and I can provide facts and context for this subject matter with customized one-on-one lessons and attention. [more]

But like an infant learning how to walk, I was always strangely sure that if I kept at it, one day I'd break through. I scored in t... [more]

My name is Michael, and I am a graduate of CUNY, Queens College master's program in Urban Affairs.
