I studied high school math at Phillips Exeter, a top ranked prep school. With my math students, I draw heavily on Exeter's Harkness method, a discussion based style of teaching that allows the student to explore concepts by completing practice problems and explaining their methods and thought processes. By helping students become familiar with the concepts underlying the problems they are solving, I aim to make math more interesting and transparent while improving confidence and grades. Tutoring is about more than just helping students to pass a test. While grades are important, my goal for my [more]

I have helped many students turn their geometry grades around. First students must know how to solve equations since this will be incorporated into many of the problems. When it comes to building proofs I have found that it's important for students to first memorize the theorems. Then we walk through different kinds of proofs. Observing how different kinds of proofs are laid out really helps students grasp the process involved. If needed, I provide students with additional practice on any concepts before quizzes or tests. I am a PhD student studying Nuclear and Particle Physics at Carnegie Mellon University. I am passionate about inspiring students, especially young women, to feel confident in their mathematical and scientific abilities. While most of this confidence is gained through thoroughly learning the course material, I find it is equally important to understand how and when to ask for help with understanding. Trained primarily as a Supplemental Instructor for a college physics class at the University ... [more]
