I took the GRE test two times while preparing to go to grad school. I used various prep books, but never made use of any classes or programs to help boost my score. Studying for standardized tests is much different than preparing for class exams. Tests are designed to evaluate your problem-solving abilities, not just your memorization of formulas and facts. Test-takers must be able to adapt and react quickly to each new question. When tutoring students for tests like the GRE, I make sure foundational skills are strong, but spend much more time helping them notice patterns in questions, choose plans of attack, and learn to immediately follow those plans to completion. I got a perfect score on the GRE Quantitative section, scored one notch below perfect on the essays, and scored well above average in the Verbal section. Here's my advice for each section. Quant: review all the math you've forgotten through high school geometry, beginning with the most basic arithmetic. If the GRE gives you letters, pick some numbers. In summer of 2014 I scored a perfect 340 on the GRE-- 170/170 on the Quantitative Section and 170/170 on the Verbal Reasoning section. (I also scored a 5 out of 6 on the Analytical Writing Section). Since then I have tutored several students on the GRE on the quantitative, verbal reasoning, and analytical writing sections.
