I began to teach myself Italian, funnily enough, during a visit to Belgium. Brussels has a multi-ethnic community comprised of refugees from Northern Africa to World War II era Italians who wanted no part of Benito Mussolini's regime. Some of these aforementioned Italians instilled in me what pride Italians abroad take in their heritage and spurred me on to teach myself the language. From there I took two years of Italian courses at the University of Oregon, receiving A and A+s in all of them.
