During my 14 years tutoring I have helped basic computer students, computer programming students, writing students and math students solve problems that mattered to them. My first geometry student went from a 'D' to a 'B' in one lesson, because I didn't tell him what to do; I asked him the questions that made him understand what he knew and what he didn't know. I have many programming mentees who are now themselves programmers at top firms. In my computer programming teaching, I have taken a... [more]

Programming is a fun way to try out different kinds of algorithms in math, such as the Fibonacci Series, sorting numbers, searching through a set of data. You really don't have to know a great deal of technical information to get started in programming, especially in Java, and you will be surprised how much you can do with just a little bit of this knowledge. I can understand why a lot of students these days fall behind or lose interest in math. Subjects like Algebra and Trigonometry are taught in such a way that if you fall behind just a little bit, it can seem almost impossible to catch up. [more]
