Elementary Teacher for 8 years

I have a BA from the University of Michigan. I am a certified teacher for K-6 in Florida. For the past four years I have taught K or grade 1. In order to teach phonics, I use a step strategy system. First, use onset and meaning to decode a word. This is when a student will take individual sounds and blend them together. Second, sound out the word to elongating the sound. Third, students have to learn rules because not all words can be blended from a left to right pattern. For example, a word ending in an e will make a long vowel sound. Words like "cop" now add the e and the word is now "cop [more]

Bilingual Spanish-English Educator

Learning how to teach Phonics to an ESL student was part of my Elementary Education Master's Degree. I really enjoy teaching Phonics, as it is related to Music, my big passion. Having a good ear has helped me to master English Phonics as much as English Grammar. English Phonics is a subject in which most of Spanish speakers are weak. Being a native Spanish speaker myself, makes easy to identify, understand and address students' specific needs. My most recent Master's degree qualified me as an ESL teacher in Spain, after having already taught Elementary native Spanish speakers in the Immersi [more]

Math Magic EPCOT engineering week presenter

Reading and Phonics go hand-in-hand, especially when students are just learning how to read. I am also certified in Reading. I have found that there are two main methods for learning how to read. One is phonics, the other is holistic (e.g. memorizing the entire word as the "sound", then extrapolating to other words. I had two children who learned how to read through phonics and one who learned holistically. In both cases, reading aloud will be part of each lesson. I am a public speaker and love to zap anyone with the "I can do it" attitude about life long learning. B.S. in Mathematics [more]
