Phonics - I have spent the last year as a volunteer Phonics/Reading tutor using the Wilson Method at the Drake Adult Literacy Center in Des Moines. I continue to teach adults one-on-one twice/week as well as help train new volunteers in the Wilson method, which uses a magnetic board, word cards, writing, speaking, and listening activities. I also teach Phonics in the ESL (English as a Second Language) beginners class at DMACC in Des Moines. The first semester has just finished, and I will be continuing to teach the summer and fall sessions. I love teaching how to learn to read through phoneti [more]

Let's Learn Using Your Best Learning Styles!

I minored in English in college, as well as taking graduate courses in linguistics - which included phonics. As an elementary student, I studied phonics myself, and know how valuable the learning of sounds is to students struggling to learn to read. Hajime-mashite! Nice to meet you! My name is Anne and I have my IA K-12 music license, as well as my IN Professional Educator license. I've just added an ESL endorsement to my standard IA teaching license. Although music is my area of endorsement, I have been doing substitute teaching in many areas -- in particular, for middle school math teach [more]

Have the Education, Experience, and Passion for teaching Reading

I have taken training in tutoring in Dyslexia. I am a member of the International Dyslexia Association and International Literacy Association. I have had 26 years of experience in teaching in public and private schools and over seven years in reading tutoring. I have many materials that I can adapt to use for individual students. I keep up with the latest research on how to help struggling students. Seeing my students read well when they didn?t think they ever would gives me great joy. Ever since I cried over my first chapter book, Bambi, I have felt a great love of reading. This love has fol [more]

Personable and Helpful Elementary Substitute for Reading, Writing

I have my Reading Endorsement. Phonics are covered extensively in the courses I was required to take. I also did my Practicum with a Title 1 Reading teacher at Mt. Ayr Elementary. I am currently student teaching in a 4th grade classroom and will finish at the end of this month (February). I will then be substitute teaching in area schools as I work to complete the exam required to receive my Iowa teaching license. I have my Reading Endorsement and hope to eventually become a Reading Specialist. After I have taught for 3 years I will work to get my master's degree. I have worked in Kindergarten [more]

Skillful and experienced elementary/highschool tutor

I have a good understanding of phonics. I've used phonetic-based methods for teaching reading. I've observed that phonetic knowledge enables reading success! I'm also able to teach students who read whole words instead of using phonics. I have lots of experience from teaching in public school, homeschooling and tutoring. While I've liked it all, I especially enjoy concentrating with one student at a time and addressing their particular needs. And it works! I'll work patiently and kindly but progress steadily toward our goal(s). I'm conscientious: I think about your student between [more]
