Experienced Science Tutor

In the elementary grades, understanding phonics (the sounding out of words) is crucial for the development of reading and writing proficiency. The sounding out of words is not the only skill gained from phonics, since children need to recognize and associate the sounds with word patterns, families and endings. Proficiency in spelling is also dependent on such associations. I am a biology professor and research scientist, with a passion for reading and writing. I worked with my children on phonics and also volunteered in their elementary school, working with other children in the second to four [more]

Former teacher looking to help children

Teaching reading was a passion of mine I developed during my masters program. I was drawn to creating phonics based games that I used in 1st and 2nd grade classrooms in addition to teaching my own children how to read at home. Phonics is ideally taught through repetitious games. For example, creating baskets with have certain sounds attached to them and letting the children toss items into the baskets that match the beginning sound. This could transfer into reading words and sorting them into separate pockets on a board. Phonics is a great puzzle piece of children learning how to read ind [more]

Although I typically draw from many methods to teach reading, phonics is one that is fundamental or provides the foundation for learning to read, especially for second language learners. Because the English language contains so many exceptions and irregularities in terms of letters and corresponding sounds, such as the schwa and soft and hard sounds of c and g, learning the basics of phonics is critical for younger and for most ESL students.
