Effective English Tutor Focusing on Reading, Comprehension + Test Prep

I have taken several phonics courses at university as well as with private vendors and received certification to instruct in those programs, (First Focus Phonics; LiPs with Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, Reading Revolution). I employ methods, techniques, strategies and use any materials from them in my practice as determined by the student's level, ability and need. I try to avoid books with pictures of the words and show pictures only after the sound, syllable/s are comfortably reproduced through reading and sounding letters, digraphs, etc., only. Sight words are introduced after master [more]

Here to Help You in Your March to Success!

My experience with phonics includes assembling a guide to English that includes sections on phonics, phonetics, and focus on oddities in English including pronunciation of "ed" endings, spelling peculiarities for pronunciation (e.g., through, rough, and thorough) and related issues. My teaching philosophy is that learning should be an enjoyable experience. I want to see your eyes alert, your mouth smiling, and your brain working! I emphasize English studies here because that is what most calls for my services have been. For studies in other areas of my expertise, my philosophy is the same: e [more]

K-12, Bilingual, Reading/Language Arts, Mathematics Tutoring

I taught phonics in grades Kindergarten (2 years), 2nd (4 years) and 3rd (3 years). Especially in Kindergarten for 3-4 months at beginning of school year I taught the letters and the sounds that go along with each. This included letter sound combinations as well as phonemic awareness. In 1985, I left one career and began another. I moved from a clerical career to a teaching career. After one year in the Mills College graduate teacher training program I graduated and obtained my teaching credential. Following graduation I substitute taught in the West Contra Costa USD while applying for a [more]

Teacher - K-6 - 10 years teaching experience

I taught 1st grade for two years and have worked with all grade levels advancing children in reading. I have run leveled trading groups in 2nd grade teaching students to isolate sounds, sound out, diagraph recognition, letter sounds, vowel blends, and more. I have found assessment of students reading levels to be an essential first step. Then I put them into small groups and read with them everyday using leveled books geared towards the teaching of phonetics and sight word recognition as well. I'm a Bay Area native and have a degree in Liberal Studies and Education. I also have a multiple teac [more]

I can tutor in English, and Spanish. I have my Bachelors degree.

I have experience working as a tutor last year with Reading Partners which uses a lot of Phonics to teach the students reading or vocabulary or word. I would like to tutor in Spanish, English, Art History, basic computer Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, or elementary French. I have my Bachelor's degree in French. I'm Hispanic and grew up speaking English and Spanish at the same time. I'm detail oriented, and will work hard to make sure that my student learns the subject at the same time enjoys learning. I'm very organized and focused. The opportunity to teach a student is great experience to [more]

Lynda R. - Tutoring Experience in a Variety of Subjects K-12

Phonics involves the ability to sound out words by using a literacy method such as Open Court. This program emphasizes, letter, sound, picture for all short vowel, consonants, long vowels and some silent ones such as boat. When I taught kindergarten we also used big books with rhymes to reenforce these letter sounds. I have been in the teaching world in some capacity since 1994. I have worked as an instructional assistant in a special education classroom. I have substitute taught in many districts in the Bay area. I have taught in my own classroom in elementary schools for 7 years(various gra [more]

Ray, the Math teacher

Recently, my 2nd grade class worked on using double consonants. The lesson involved a simple rule (we don't worry about exceptions with the younger grades): A short vowel word gets a double consonant when you add -ed or -ing. A long vowel word gets a single consonant when adding -ed or -ing. The example used involves two words, "hop" and "hope." Hop becomes "hopped" and "hopping", while hope becomes "hoped" and "hoping." We then brainstormed single syllable words where we could apply this rule, then made sentences that use at least two of the words. With practice, their spelling and readi [more]

credentialed teacher, linguist and writer

I have a clear California teaching credential for multiple subjects. From 2007 to 2011 I worked as a Title I remedial reading and math teacher in San Francisco through Catapult Learning, a national company funded by the federal government. The majority of my classes were in reading, and I taught dozens of lessons in phonics to beginning readers in 1st and 2nd grade. I still have my lesson plans, and I use some of them to help U.S. newcomers to learn English. After a long career in journalism, I gradually began to switch to teaching in 2001, and became a full-time teacher in 2006. I have spent [more]
