As a certified middle school generalist, my greatest strength is preparing students for high school academics - particularly mathematics. Besides growing up gifted in math, I excelled in high school algebra & geometry, and my college training included linear algebra, business analysis, physics, and statistics - all of which require command of algebra. In my teaching career, I studied the middle school & high school math curriculum very closely, and helped prepare many 6th & 7th graders for high school algebra. [more]

Hi there, I love teaching! My subject specialties are Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, English, and ESL. There's nothing like the rush of putting foreign language skills to the test in real-time conversation. I used Spanish every day during my semester abroad in Argentina, which is where I learned the importance of active practice when learning a foreign language. After Argentina, I went to China to improve my Mandarin Chinese in the same way I did with Spanish, and I enrolled in full time C... [more]

I've been a tutor ever since I was in high school, which inspired me to become a high school teacher. I used to volunteer tutor and then became a paid tutor at the University of Texas at Austin. I graduated from University of Texas at Austin in Dec. 2007 with a degree in Chemistry and also completed the UTeach program to become a certified Texas Science Grades 8-12 teacher. Throughout my career, I have achieved many interesting and diverse things: I have worked on cutting edge NASA imaging systems, innovated new combustion engine technologies for Cummins, played saxophone on two Grammy-nominated albums, coded video games and artificial intelligence algorithms, and co-wrote several screenplays, three of which were optioned by Hollywood production companies. However, despite my successes, my greatest joy still comes from sharing my knowledge and igniting a passion... [more]

So often I find that students have been presented with steps and rules rather than the development of the why something works. Therefore, I take the time to develop concepts and understanding of the mathematics. I have tutored in the south Austin area for the past six years as well as provided instruction for home schooled students. I have taught the following elementary and secondary courses: 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th grade math, Algebra I, Pre-AP Algebra I, Geometry, Pre-AP Geometry, Algebra 2... [more]

I have been a math tutor for five years. I also worked as a middle school math teacher in a high needs school for one year. I believe in the UPS - check method of solving problems. That is: U - Understand the problem - what is being asked P - Plan how you are going to solve the problem S - Solve the problem Check - Check your solution, particularly for reasonableness I believe in giving the students the background so that they can understand how and why certain solution methods work. This... [more]

I have always enjoyed learning and education. I remember as a kid helping classmates understand certain concepts and having a feeling of satisfaction knowing I could teach something to someone else. My thirst for education has never ended. I grew up, went to college, studied electrical engineering for my undergraduate degree and worked designing computer chips for companies like Motorola and IBM. I eventually went back and received my master's degree in electrical engineering and worked at Sa... [more]

Concepts, Concepts, and Concepts !!! Concepts are really important aspect of mathematics. Once you have clear understanding of a concept, you can solve any problem in mathematics. Everyone has different way of learning a concept, I would help my students in understanding the concept through their way of thinking process in 1:1 sitting so that it will inculcate the interest and passion in mathematics. Champions breeding the champions. We practice through mastery, repeat problems to grasp t... [more]

I devised and taught for five years a summer school pre-algebra program for incoming freshmen students to St. Michael's Catholic Academy (SMCA). All students applying to SMCA must take a placement exam to determine if they are ready to take Algebra 1 that fall. If they performed below standards, then they were required to take the four-week course. It was an homework intensive course covering all of the topics in a typical pre-algebra course. Grades were kept but the course was Pass-Fail. TUTORING PHILOSOPHY Having taught over 1000 high school students while teaching math at St. Michael's Ca [more]
