This is probably the most fundamental subject in Math. Students taking Algebra 2 will have to use properties learned in pre-algebra. I enjoy teaching this subject to make sure the basics are well learned. In addition, I have vast experience working with Middle and Elementary School students. I have more than 15 years of experience in tutoring students of all ages and levels of education from elementary to graduate school. I am most interested in changing the way my students perceive themselves when approaching math. Throughout the years, I have had the most rewarding experience when my studen [more]

I just graduated from UCSD with a B.S. in Physiology and Neuroscience. My GPA was 3.75. I'm currently completing a gap year before I begin medical school in August. In college, I was a volunteer tutor for a student organization in which I taught organic chemistry and physiology. I also was a Teaching Assistant in a Metabolic Brain Disorders course during which I was responsible for the learning of 40 students. My youngest brother is currently in high school and I often help him study for his ... [more]

One of Wyzant's top tutors! She is very experienced in tutoring Pre-Algebra. She knows exactly what the Pre-algebra student needs to know. Susan is very knowledgeable with Common Core Math. For those students trying to test-out of Pre-algebra, she covers all the categories they would need to know. She teaches in a way the student readily understands the concepts. She also has access to test copies of the State standards tests and Smarter-Balanced (Common Core) tests for her students to do to make sure they understand all aspects and concepts the State expects them to know. Prealgebra is the key stepping stone between Elementary Math and Algebra 1. I do not recommend skipping Prealgebra. It introduces important concepts and some aspects of Geometry that will be essential going forward. It is always best to take Math step by step and build a firm foundation. This way , you will enjoy the subject and it will benefit you greatly. I am formerly a member of staff at Saddleback College, Mission Viejo, California, where I tutored Mathematics and Chemistry in the Learning Resource Center (LRC). In the Spring of 2012, I was honored by being the only tutor ever to be a [more]

I am a UCI honors graduate in mathematics with a minor in computer science. I started tutoring as a favor for a friend and have found that tutoring is one of the most rewarding experiences I can have. Many of my students have gone from D's with no understanding to A's with the ability to peer tutor their classmates. It is always wonderful to enter a student's home and hear "I got an A on the test!" or "the teacher says I am her most improved student." I look for the concepts that students... [more]

Prealgebra can be tough. Indeed, learning how to deal with the mental knots frustration we tie ourselves in is just as important as understanding how to add fractions. With my holistic approach, I help my students with the prealgebra, yes, but I help them even more to learn how to teach themselves. This is my gift. Kathryn is a professional private tutor who spends her life helping students understand tough concepts in math and science. She is an aficionado of these subjects herself, having spent a rigorous four years at Harvey Mudd College, where she received her BS in Molecular Biology in 20 [more]

As a teacher who has taught practically all the grades at the elementary level, K-7, I have received much training, have gained much experience and subsequently much knowledge of how to teach/tutor math. I find that the knowledge of the four number processes, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, must be a fundamental acquisition for the student to be able to handle all the subsequent areas of mathematics. This skill must be perfected by helping him/her build understanding and confidence. To help build understanding, my role as a teacher/tutor is to be a questioner and a talkin [more]

Pre-algebra is fresh on my mind since I worked on it with my daughter recently. I kindly explain the techniques and the reasoning behind the formulas and methods. This makes the subject very easy to my students. I have been a tutor for Math and Farsi for about 15 years now. I used to work for an institution in LA while working as a private tutor as well. Now, due to my busy schedule and high demand I only do private and small group tutoring. I am good with children, having two of my own. My teaching techniques are effective and fun and my students have a great time while learning new things. [more]

Math can be so intimidating to young people, but I have such a relaxed method of easing students into the material that they usually end up loving math! For most, the challenge is word problems; however, there are several "secrets" to getting word problems and my students are always surprised at how easy they can be! I love math! A very caring and patient master teacher of 35 years! As a certified K-8 Reading Specialist, I will assess your child's phonics and reading comprehension skills and create a program for his/her particular needs.
