Let's start with why I love tutoring. The most important reason is that my life experiences have taught me that almost nothing is beyond anyone's grasp, as long as they truly desire to learn it and have a teacher who believes in them. I enjoy being that teacher. While I am new to this platform, I have been teaching and tutoring in some fashion for over 30 years, starting with being a Calculus tutor for undergraduates when I was in graduate school. I have been the math teacher at 2 charter... [more]

My approach to Prealgebra is always two fold. I work hard to make sure a student has the basic skills to realistically progress throughout the class while maintaining current work levels. Once I assess a students Math IQ, I put them into the appropriate starting position along the progressive math highway to success. I do this through a set of uniquely written practice problems and exercises that I can send off the clock that are designed to increase overall Math IQ. I also have check point quizzes so if given enough time I can show a tangible record of progression. I have been successfu [more]

I completed Prealgebra in 8th grade, earning an A in it both semesters of that year, as well as throughout my previous two years of middle school. I was very fortunate to have excellent middle school math teachers. One in particular, my 7th grade teacher, was enthusiastic enough about math to make sure her students all put their best effort into the class, and she stated that she wouldn't expect students to work harder than she was working for them, or to do anything she wasn't already doing herself. Having had such a positive experience with Prealgebra, I strive to bring the same level of ent [more]

I graduated from high school in 2011 as valedictorian and gained substantial tutoring experience in both mathematics (algebra and geometry) and chemistry for junior high school and high school students. Immediately following graduation, I enrolled at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where I pursued a double major in Biochemistry and German. Throughout my undergraduate education, I took advanced coursework in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. My specialty is tutoring in math... [more]

I hold my Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Michigan, where I have had the opportunity to teach courses in composition and the humanities to a wide range of students. As a tutor, I rely on humor, Socratic method, and mutual accountability to motivate and build rapport. I attend to the content knowledge as well as the mindsets that transform learning and have helped students raise test scores, prepare admissions packages, and master new skills. Prealgebra is the basic introduction of using variables and numbers to count, add, subtract, and multiply and divide to solve basic equations and functions for all number lines, x and y coordinates and function tables in preparation for modern Algebra I. To all interested parents and students, my twenty plus years working in the the Detroit area public schools has given me a very good understanding of what students need in the classrooms. I've learned how to deal with students needing academic support by being very patient with the learning process. I taught mathematics on the high school and [more]
