I have been tutoring all high school and college math courses, and many science courses, for the past 20 years with students of all abilities, from those who have a phobia of math to those who are looking for a little edge to get them into a top-tier college/graduate school, including PreAlgebra. I generally use the students' current knowledge and ask probing questions to get them to teach themselves the material and bring in experiences to facilitate learning (I find this Socratic method works best for retention), but, when needed, will lecture. I have three years experience helping high school students with a variety of subjects, both in small groups and one-on-one. Although my classroom teaching has been in history, I have found success tutoring students in math. I believe lessons from someone that is not coming from a math background provides a useful alternative to those students struggling with the subject. I have just relocated to Brooklyn, NY from Providence, RI, where I taught US History (and after school puppetry) at a small alternative high school for three years, where a combination of class size and school philosophy allow [more]

I began teaching math back in the 1970's in middle school. I enjoyed working with the students very much. At the time I had a young family with a wife and 4 children. Needing more money I took a job with the Providence Journal which paid me much more. After 16 years with the Journal I decided to return to my first love, teaching. I taught summer school at first at Ponagansett High, but then got a job working with the Southern RI collaborative for the next 17 years, which catered to stude... [more]
