As a classroom resource teacher, I taught prealgebra to groups of students who were accelerated in mathematics, as well as to groups of students who were challenged by the subject. Over the past eighteen years, I have tutored at least fifteen private students in prealgebra, and I currently tutor two students in the subject. I have been tutoring students aged 2 to 70 for the past eighteen years. I specialize in working with students who have a diagnosis of ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Bipolar Disorder and Depression. As both a tutor and a classroom teacher, I developed an understanding of [more]

I taught pre-algebra for a number of years in a Minneapolis charter high school. It was great fun helping students move from memorizing operations to understanding how numbers work together. I have numerous tricks and tips to help speed up that understanding. I love working one-on-one with students! My passion is creating learning settings where students can shine and grow. Students are encouraged to follow their own interests. While I like tutoring both math and music, I am particularly interested in the connection between music and math. Piano lessons include understanding rhythm, listening [more]

To students and parents: From my experiences, I've learned how to communicate confusing and difficult mathematical and statistical concepts in multiple ways that can be understood by anyone. If something doesn't make sense to you, I can explain it in several different ways and customize an explanation specifically for you such that we can leverage what you already know to help make the material clicks. I've been tutoring since I was in high school, learning effective methods of teaching an... [more]

It's very important to make a student understand the usefulness of algebra. If he goes shopping how can he make sure he gets the correct change? It's also very important not to skip a gradient, i.e., make sure he knows how to add before he learns to subtract. My lower grade students like to use the abacus or play dominoes or use real money. Both the students and I have fun and once they are certain of their skills they have no more trouble with math. I can teach English, ESL, German, Swedish, Math, and Social Sciences. My methods are highly personalized. The first step is to establish rapport [more]

Prealgebra is sometimes when students lose ground in math. It's important to make sure that you understand the concepts, not just memorize procedures, because later math classes build on them. When I work with a student one on one, we can discover what individual difficulties the student has with the material. Sometimes a student hasn't solidly grasped a concept that was covered earlier, so we need to back up and fix that before we can move on. This way we build a solid foundation for future work. Many students need concrete or visual examples. I'm good at that! I've never met a word problem [more]
