In my opinion, education is not something that you do for a relatively few years as a child, teenager or young adult. It's an adventure that will not be completed until that-day-that-shall-not-be-mentioned. As a tutor, I try to build a desire for lifelong learning in my students by encouraging them to engage in the world around them. This involves asking questions, thinking critically and "supposing" (thinking creatively). This doesn't look the same for everyone; I strongly feel that it is im... [more]

As a math major, I provided tutoring to classmates in the full range of math subjects. Following graduation I put my math and physics to practical use in military aviation. For the last five years I have been instructing a range of aviation topics, including both classroom and hands-on contexts. All of this has involved instructing math and physics. I enjoy seeing a student grasp a new concept. I have found that every student learns differently. When an approach that works with one st... [more]

I've taught pre-algebra, algebra I, and algebra II for over 10 years. My style is two fold: (1) teach the mathematical concepts behind the algebra (why things work they way they do) and (2) translate math into simple English along with ideas and pictures. (To get a more details and examples, please read Lori Peterson's quote in my profile.) In my community college classes I would begin the semester with 40 students and end with 36 (with 2 dropping out because of work changes and 2 to take care of a family member). I didn't know this was exceptionally good until I learned that other "good" inst [more]

I have many years of business and engineering experience, this allows me to give the student insight on how a current lesson relates to real life situations. Many engineering, math and science problem solving difficulties come from not understanding the question being asked. Developing a simple and clear system to organize and understand the given data, the unknowns and the solution method is as important as a quick solution. I am a Civil Engineer with Professional Engineer licenses in... [more]
