In my opinion, education is not something that you do for a relatively few years as a child, teenager or young adult. It's an adventure that will not be completed until that-day-that-shall-not-be-mentioned. As a tutor, I try to build a desire for lifelong learning in my students by encouraging them to engage in the world around them. This involves asking questions, thinking critically and "supposing" (thinking creatively). This doesn't look the same for everyone; I strongly feel that it is im... [more]

As a math major, I provided tutoring to classmates in the full range of math subjects. Following graduation I put my math and physics to practical use in military aviation. For the last five years I have been instructing a range of aviation topics, including both classroom and hands-on contexts. All of this has involved instructing math and physics. I enjoy seeing a student grasp a new concept. I have found that every student learns differently. When an approach that works with one st... [more]

To give you an idea of how well I teach pre-calculus let me share what I did when I taught it at Chapman University. This school required every student -- whether they were an Art, English, History, or similar major -- to take pre-calculus. This meant I had students whose ability and needs ranged from hating math and never needing this course in the future to those who loved it and were going onto calculus. I changed the text book so that the students got material that they would use should they go on for calculus. I also found strategic ways to equip my students so they could see the Big Idea [more]

Even though I have taught and tutored many mathematics classes, Pre-calculus is still probably my favorite. I find great joy in helping students master the topics that will help them love Calculus. I love mathematics and showing how useful and beautiful it can be. I have tutored for over 10 years and have taught both high school and college mathematics during the past 5 years. For classes, I would be happy to help you get caught up on any material missed or not fully understood, or even help you get ahead. I will help you on your homework by checking your work or helping to fill content kn [more]

Throughout my bachelor's degree program in mechanical engineering, I tutored algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and physics. During this time, I found that understanding concepts was more important than memorizing equations. I spent a lot of extra time on my own home work so that I could understand these concepts, and while tutoring I was able to help other students come to this same understanding. It can be difficult at times, but I am patient and willing to put in the time to help anyone lear... [more]

Understanding mathematical concepts promotes creativity in solving mathematical problems. Anyone who understands math can correctly work the problems at the level of their understanding; however, it is possible to do math, even advanced math and especially with a calculator, and yet not understand any of it. Understanding offers alternatives to problem solving, and insight into the problem itself, especially when applied to physics. Confidence also is concomitant with understanding. Whe... [more]
