As a full-time tutor, I see a lot of questions about probability. One of the biggest challenges is just the difference between a permutation and a combination. The standard way of thinking of it is if "order matters", but for many students, that definition is not good enough. Instead, I suggest students think about the objects once they have been selected: can you mix up the results without changing the outcome? If so, then it is a combination; if it does change the outcome, then it is a permutation. For most probability topics, I can offer a different perspective to make more sense of the act [more]

When I was in high school, I did very well in the probability portion of my Algebra class. I have also studied it on my own to keep it fresh in my mind. I regularly tutor probability concepts to my students. I love to tutor. I absolutely love it when I can visually see a student beginning to understand something that they were having trouble with. I use the knowledge that I have accumulated throughout my life to help students reach that moment. A major part of my knowledge comes from the Liberal Arts education I received at Hope College. It was an amazing experience to say the least. When [more]
