TTT (Teacher Turned Tutor)

Teaching reading was not my first choice in my later years of teaching, but when asked to teach it my last year in TX, I actually enjoyed it. Over the years of subbing, I certainly taught many classes in reading, and during my first years as a teacher, to receive first graders who could not read, and have them exit my room as readers was one of the highlights of my career. Reading is a lifelong skill and absolute joy. I would enjoy working with your child to instill a love of reading and give him/her skills to improve his/her comprehension and understanding of what he's read. [more]

Positive, patient tutor, focused on your getting results easily

Most of my students are right brain dominant so we work on improving reading comprehension, reading, spelling and math word problems using the strengths of right brain dominance. Although the tutoring lessons are planned and focus, I also include some fun time using as many of the sensory learning channels as possible. I moved to the Charlotte area from Arizona at the end of 2013 and have been helping students with my skills, knowledge and experience. My love and appreciation for working with children of all ages began with studying for my master's degree in Early Childhood Development from Oh [more]

Good (and bad!) writing speaks loudly, reading skills ALWAYS count

One common, directly related to comprehension flaw I recognized when working with an 8th grade student two years ago, was that she didn't follow the punctuation. It was obvious from hearing her read that she was running through the 'pauses' a comma or other punctuation signaled. Her biggest problem was that scrambled several facts into a less useful combination. Slowing her down wasn't magic, but it clearly helped her in a very short period of time Younger readers can't usually fake comprehension. For years I read stories with all my nephews, starting with the most basic books, and it didn't [more]
