Skilled, effective tutoring the way YOU learn!

I have taught reading for over 10 years. I have focused both on decoding and on comprehension and I have a wealth of material and techniques to help students at almost all levels of proficiency. I really enjoy overcoming peoples difficulties in reading and opening up the great universe of written works for their enjoyment and benefit. I have taught small groups and individuals for over 20 years, both in school settings and in students' homes or at neutral locations like coffee shops and bookstores. The first three questions I ask myself are "How does this person learn best? What is his or [more]

I make sure to apply multiple learning theories to assist the students in learning in a way that fits their needs and the requirements/materials of the course. Additionally, when I work with a student, I make sure to consult with them, the family, and the teachers with the parent/student approval to best meet the needs of the student. I typically communicate with the teachers regarding their expectations for the student, their expectations for the class, and the material that is going to be co [more]

ACT/SAT Prep + Experienced Math and English Tutor

I love to read, and I love to help others enjoy reading! I have advanced degrees in special education and in English education. I love to help students read text closely to understand how it relates to them, and to the larger world. I have always excelled in mathematics. I had good teachers in middle school and high school, and they laid a mathematics foundation that allowed me to score 780 on SAT Math and 790 on GRE Quantitative (maximum score was 800 when I took each test). I never lost points on geometry questions on either of those tests. Today I teach high school mathematics full-time in [more]

Anyone can learn to read--and to read well.

When a student struggles with reading, it is usually because he lacks the foundation skills that are necessary to succeed. With a quick assessment, I can usually identify what skills are lacking and hone in on them. For example, many students who struggle with reading, have a very low digit span. A student needs a digit span of at least five to catch on to reading and seven to master phonics. If a student lacks this ability to sequence, they will never succeed at reading. But the good news is that there are simple exercises to address this and other foundational skills that are weak. Helping [more]
