I prepare students for the following SAT tests: Math portion of the ?big? SAT and the SAT Subject Math Test, Levels 1 and 2. I began prepping students for these tests as an instructor for a couple of premier Test Prep companies. In the 10+ years since then, I have honed my skills and knowledge by prepping hundreds of students one-on-one. In addition to teaching you the timing strategies, the multiple choice based strategies, ways of using the calculator effectively, and working efficiently on each problem, I can work with you on the topics that require remediation. With this approach to sta [more]

SAT math is hard. And yet so much of it depends on what I call ?intuitive math? and having good ?mathematical radar.? There are many tutors who can teach the logical operations of mathematics. But for what it?s worth, any textbook or test prep book can teach these as well! I aim to be one of the few teachers/tutors of adolescent students who recognizes that most students have not automated critical basic skills; I have tutored many students scoring above 600 in math who are slow and inaccurate in basic multiplication of two-digit numbers; have little grasp of what fractions really are; and do [more]

I'm an expert in working with students to develop skills and to understand concepts. My expertise is especially strong in problem solving, and applying concepts to real world situations. I enjoy working with students. When my son was in college, we used to problem solve on the phone and via email. His classmates wanted him to "rent me out". I'm a 25-year veteran of Silicon Valley with multiple degrees in Engineering. I am currently an Adjunct Professor at the Golden Gate University Schoo... [more]

When I began tutoring a few years ago, I firmly believed that anyone could do well in mathematics, all the way through Calculus, provided you are relatively fluent in a few formulas and make time for regular problem sets. My experience over that time has only confirmed my suspicions, and its has been a great pleasure to work with many of my students. I have always found joy in getting to the point of a big concept and keeping the focus on the purposeful real-world applications that many of ... [more]

Hello! I am a PhD from the department of Rhetoric at UC Berkeley who has 15+ years of tutoring and teaching experience. In addition to several years teaching at UC Berkeley, I have privately tutored and taught Kaplan courses for the following tests: SSAT, ACT, SAT, LSAT, and GRE. I have also worked with clients on reading and writing skills, aided students with college and grad school applications, and I have done targeted work with youth (high school and middle school). My core area of inte... [more]

The standard approach of tutoring SAT Math seems to be reviewing math topics and working on as many problems as possible from an SAT practice book. This type of preparation is time consuming and has limited success. My proven method is very different. I believe students benefit more from an individualized approach targeting their weaknesses. I teach students various strategies to find the correct answer even if they don't know how to solve the problem directly. For students who struggle with making careless mistakes, I teach them effective techniques they can use to minimize these costly mista [more]

I've coached MATHCOUNTS teams in the past, and I found that a lot of the problem solving skills needed for these competitions make it easy to do well on the math portions of the SAT and ACT. In addition, as part of my job as a researcher, I have had to teach undergraduate students the basics of working in a lab, as well as the underlying science background and concepts needed to understand the ongoing projects in the lab. Over the years, I've learned the best when my teachers encouraged me... [more]
