My love of teaching comes from the thrill of watching students gain confidence and succeed in reaching their goals, whatever those might be. In nearly 10 years of working for nationally-recognized tutoring and supplemental education companies, I have had the pleasure of helping hundreds of students from elementary through college levels find their confidence and see their grades and test scores improve. It's been the most rewarding aspect of my education career, and I couldn't see myself do... [more]

I have taught several SAT Prep classes at a local high school, as well as privately tutored students who are getting ready to take the SAT, including Math. It is important to first identify the student's strengths and weaknesses through a variety of different methods. While working on their weaker areas, I will also teach them valuable tips and test-taking strategies in order to maximize their test score. I have taught high school science for over 30 years. I am certified by the State of Virginia in Chemistry, Physics, and Earth & Space Science. Although my classroom experience has been i [more]

I've been tutoring intermittently for a long time. The first time was in fifth grade but it wasn't a somewhat consistent thing until high school. There I helped some peers for free, meeting them on a weekly basis. I also started a math club at my school (Maury high in Norfolk) that ended up devolving into group tutoring. The subjects then that I helped with were algebra, geometry, and calculus. In college I was a math major and physics minor. In my sophomore and junior year I worked for my ... [more]

The formalities: I have been tutoring professionally in the Hampton Roads area for over seven years, and I worked as a peer tutor in both high school and college. I also taught algebra 1, pre-calculus, and personal finance at a private high school in Norfolk, VA. I graduated from Columbia University with a degree in economics and from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science at William & Mary with a Master's degree in Oceanography. I primarily have worked with adolescents and teenagers who ar... [more]

The math SAT can be a difficult test. It requires both math and some VERBAL skills. Sometimes solving the problem is not hard if the student knows what is being asked. I offer strategies to all aspects of problem solving. Because the questions are mostly multiple choice, I expose the students to different ways to solve the question: process of elimination, abstract reasoning, graphic representation, etc. It is not unusual for my students to achieve 60-85 more points with short term tutoring. Thank you for reading my profile. [more]

I earned 730/800 (missed two questions) on the most recent version of SAT Math. Taken three times (each a different version). Above 90th percentile every time. Summary: I enjoy helping others succeed (more than myself at times). Despite missing just two questions on the SAT, I decided to enlist in Navy. They tried to convince me to be a nuclear technician but I like myself radiation free - thank you very much. Living the dream in the Navy, and a lot of it was training and helping others. Someone must have noticed I liked it and didn't stink too bad, because I was asked (okay, told) to go [more]

I have tutored for many years. My goal is to break any subject into pieces a student is able to digest. I believe in having fun in what I do and I hope the student will have fun while learning. Let us face it - most math teachers try to make the subject harder than it is. Mathematics has plenty of patterns. My goal is to help the student find the pattern easy for him/her and this will give the student an advantage in later studies. I am a relaxed person, but I have an excitement for M... [more]

As a recipient of a perfect 800 score on the math SAT back in the day, I know what it takes to get through this type of high-stress test. I can help you review the key concepts including ratios, probability, geometry and graphs, as well as help with test-taking strategy, such how to make best use of your time and how to make better guesses when that's necessary. I have worked with many students, and typically focus on helping students achieve about 100 point improvements in their math score, from about 600, to 700 or better. You may see other tutors promise more, but they are not the ones t [more]

Hello! I am experienced admissions professional, having both worked in undergraduate admissions and law school admissions. I have coordinated and been a part of college admissions workshops, mock application workshops, and have worked at a highly selective liberal arts school in their admission office. With mock application workshops, I walked through the admission process with both parents and students to allow them to understand how college applications are read and how best students can... SAT Math covers a range of problems. I try to ensure you know how to solve as many problems as possible. I have been tutoring/teaching students math for the past 15 years. I have taught elementary through Calculus II math. I enjoy the one-on-one tutoring and love to help people succeed. I try to make it fun and get to know how the person learns. I try to find out their interests to relate the problems to what they enjoy. Most word problems will start with their name. I try to explain concepts and ensure that they know how to solve the problems. When studying for tests, I try to cove [more]
