My name is Abbey and I'd love to be your tutor. I have been tutoring for over ten years. I am a former MIT student and I graduated from UAlbany with a BS in Mathematics and Statistics and a minor in Economics. I have a lot of experience tutoring. While I was in Albany, I worked with three private local tutoring companies. In addition to those, as you can see, I am a tutor with WyzAnt. I have logged over 5,000 tutoring hours at WyzAnt. I attained my B.S. with honors from the University of Michigan with a major in Physics and minor in Mathematics. While enrolled, I worked as a research assistant for two professors who specialize in Biophysics and Astrophysics. I have an extensive background in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Astronomy. I am now a graduate student at the University at Buffalo working towards a Ph.D. in Physics. I currently work as a Teaching Assistant at UB, where I teach several of the undergraduate... [more]

I found trig to be the purest form of high school math. I loved it as a kid and had almost a perfect year when I took the subject. I scored 100% on the regents exam with quarterly grades of 98 or 99 all quarters. Although that was in 1965-66 I still have a complete understanding of trig and believe that I could make most students understand how it works. Although I was a meteorologist for 40 years I always loved math more than anything and always wanted to teach students who found math a challenge or difficult. I have had almost 8 years of experience tutoring math including algebra, geom [more]

I truly enjoy seeing those I teach "get it" and have that "ah ha" moment. A structural engineer by trade, I have to continually learn new things each and every day. It's my job! Math is my specialty of course, but I don't fit the mold as a typical engineer as I enjoy interacting with people too. Tutoring experience? Well...besides the hours on wyzant tutoring mostly algebra and trigonometry I have previously volunteered to teach at engineering outreach events at the Buffalo Museum of Sci... [more]

I am most capable of tutoring in Trigonometry. I break down the concepts into smaller parts. I like to use repetition, key phrases and mnemonics to help my students remember the concepts. For example, to remember the relationship of the sides of a right triangle and the functions sine, cosine, tangent: Oscar Had A Headache Over Algebra (sine=Opposite/Hypotenuse, cosine=Adjacent/Hypotenuse, tangent=Opposite/Adjacent). I make flashcards for the students. I have found that this helps the students to quickly review the concepts and commit them to memory. [more]

Trigonometry means you have to memorize formulas and rules but the subject has so much practical value that you will use it over and over in your career without thinking about it. Trigonometry, as in all math, requires you to do the homework but it always helps to do extra practice problems. I will show you the good habits that work for ANY math in ANY subject. I believe that only those with deep knowledge in a subject can really get it across to others using the simplest terms and analogies. [more]
