A subject all about circles and angles. For many students, this will be the first class in which they encounter problems that are more like "puzzles", with no single obvious path to a solution. Proving trigonometric identities, for instance, is more an art than a science. I have a lot of professional experience tutoring this subject. For many years, I worked at a math tutoring center, and I was commonly asked for help with Trigonometry. I have gotten very good at guiding students gently, and helping them achieve the experience and confidence they need to solve these problems independently. [more]

I'm a college professor with 25+ years of experience teaching mathematics and computer programming. My favorite subjects include precalculus, calculus, linear algebra, optimization and numerical analysis. I believe the only way to learn mathematics or computer programming is by working through many exercises and problems. There's no way around this. It doesn't matter how well a lecture is presented or how good the teacher is. If you don't do the work yourself, you'll probably not succeed. ... [more]

I have had a variety of work experience in government and private industry, primarily in computers(software)/mathematics. My college degrees are B.A. (math) and M.S. (math); early in my career, I obtained a substitute-teaching credential for California community (two-year) colleges. I have tutored students in high school math and at the two-year college level. My approach is somewhat informal: reviewing a student's current and recent course material, engaging the student in a brief discuss... [more]
