Reading Specialist for 20 years and have worked with many students on improving their understanding of what they have read as well as written responses to reading. Working with students on Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Comprehension and Fluency.
I work with three honors English students currently as a tutor.
I have been a certified teacher for over 20 years. I have specialized in Reading, Early literacy and Comprehension. I am currently certified for elementary K-8, and Reading Specialist K-12. I have worked extensively with Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency and Comprehension the all important 5 areas of Reading. I have also tutored and worked in a regular education classroom in all subject areas. I have worked extensively in the tier areas of vocabulary that are essential in student understanding of various subject areas.
As a Reading Specialist, one of the most important aspects of reading and understanding is to increase knowledge in all five areas of learning to read. Those five areas are Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency and Comprehension. With all of these items in place, students can chunk and break words into pieces to sound them out. Also, the ability to manipulate sounds and construct new words will help as a student becomes more fluent.
As an advocate for students that I work with throughout the school year and meeting their needs, I establish the goals for their IEP. I am certified in Orton-Gillingham, Earobics, Destination Reading and Math. I also have extensive use of graphic organizers to support organization and support.
I am currently certified in both Project Read and Orton-Gillingham. These two areas are directly related to Dyslexic students as they utilize the VAKT methods. The ability to have students vary their understanding and methods to teaching help to support their reading processes.
I taught a course in Middle School and High School to work with students in Study Skills. One of the requirements beside being organized and establishing note cards, it was essential to also understand main ideas. The students would work to ensure that each of their classes had clear scope and sequence to increase and further their understanding thus leading to better grades.
