Certified Tutor specializing in Math, Chemistry, and Physics

Hi my name is Shan, I have a bachelor's degree in mathematics, with a minor in chemistry and physics. I am a CRLA ( College Reading and Learning Association) certified tutor and held the position of head math and science tutor at Oakland Community College. I have several years of experience in tutoring chemistry, math and physics. I have tutored students ranging from elementary school level to college level. My teaching style involves detailed explanation of the concepts prior to application. ... [more]

Algebra 1

College Reading and Learning Certified Tutor. BS in Mathematics + Chemistry

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 covers algebra, trigonometry, probability and some statistics. The algebra part focuses on factoring and solving equations. The trigonometry portion focuses on the right triangle and the unit circle. Students also learn how graph trigonometric functions. Basic statistics is also covered, such as how to find the mean, median and mode given a data set. I have strong a expertise in all the topics covered in Algebra 2.

Calculus is one of my favorite subjects to tutor. I believe in order for a student to succeed in Calculus, they must have a very strong algebra background. In the first session, I review algebra skills the student needs to succeed in calculus. I have tutored students in both single variable calculus and multi-variable calculus.

Chemistry is one the subjects i specialize in. I have tutored both high school students and college students in chemistry. I have prepared several students for the AP Chem exam and also the Chemistry Olympiad. I tutor almost any level of chemistry, ranging from high school chemistry all the way through quantum mechanics.

General Physics can be though of as being divided into two parts. The first part covers statics, dynamics, newtons laws, fluid mechanics and waves. The second part of physics covers electricity, magnetism and optics. Having a strong background in trigonometry helps in physics. In my first meeting with a student i go over parts of trigonometry the student needs in order to be successful in physics.

Precalculus expands on the topics covered in algebra 2. The concept of the limit is introduced to the student during Precalculus. This is an important concept as it will show up again in more advanced math classes. Trigonometric proofs which a lot of students find challenging are also covered in Precalculus.

SAT Math

I have tutored several students in the math portion of the SAT. During the first few sessions, I cover all topics tested on the SAT Math section. Then we discuss test taking strategies for the SAT. I have created several worksheets that prepare the student for the math section of the SAT. I also have created a list of some classic question types that show up frequently on the math section.

ACT Math

I have tutored several students in the math portion of the ACT. During the first few sessions, I cover all topics tested on the ACT Math section. Then we discuss test taking strategies for the ACT. I periodically have the student take sample ACT exams under timed conditions to gauge their progress.

Elementary Math

Elementary Science

Differential Equations

I have a bachelors of science in mathematics. I have tutored students in the past in differential equations. I took differential equations in college and earned a A in the class. I have a very strong grasp of the material.

I took a genetics class at the undergraduate level and earned a 4.0 in it. I have tutored 2 students in Genetics and they both improved their grade by 2 letters. The part of genetics most students struggle with is probability, due to my math background i am able to make probability easy for the student to understand.

Organic Chemistry

I have had over 20 credits of chemistry at the undergraduate level. I earned A's in both the organic chemistry classes I took. I have tutored several students in organic chemistry. The focus of organic chemistry is reaction mechanisms and synthesis problems. A reaction mechanism details the steps through which the products of a chemical reaction are formed.

Finite Math

I work as a tutor at Oakland Community College. Several students come in weekly to get help with finite math. I have successfully helped several students in understanding this subject.
