Elementary through College Math & Science Tutor; Test Preparator

I am a full-time tutor with over 8 years and 2650 hours of experience just with WyzAnt. This is not my second job or an opportunity to make extra money for college; this is my profession. It allows me to be more reliable, consistent, and flexible with my scheduling. It also allows me to form long-term commitments with my clients' families. I tutor most branches of Mathematics including Prealgebra, Algebra 1 (Elementary Algebra), Algebra 2 (Intermediate Algebra), Geometry, Precalculus, Trig... [more]

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 provides the basic building blocks for all of the Math classes. I help students master these basic principles: linear equations and inequalities in 1 or 2 variables, absolute value, slope, slope-intercept form, polynomials, quadratic equations, exponents and radicals. Plus the dreaded word problems. I tutor both the high school and college variations. I am familiar with Math 31 at SMC.

Algebra 2

For some students, Algebra 2 marks the end of their high school career; for others, it's just a stepping stone to other higher Math classes; and for a third group, it's a refresher class at college. I help students navigate through factoring and FOILing, the Quadratic Formula, complex roots, imaginary numbers, matrices, exponents, logarithms, radicals, rational expressions, series & sequences, and conic sections (hyperbolas, ellipses, and circles). At the college level, I am familiar with Math 18 and Math 20 at SMC.

Calculus

I took a year of Calculus at college. I help students understand limits, finding derivatives of algebraic and trigonometric functions, the Chain Rule, antiderivatives, definite integrals, calculating areas and volumes of figures, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. I am familiar with Math 7 at SMC.

Chemistry

At UC Irvine, I took a year of General Chemistry (plus labs) and a year of Organic Chemistry (plus labs). I love helping high school students discover and appreciate Chemistry - the order and structure of the Periodic Table, atomic structure, stoichiometry, acids and bases, thermochemistry, and nuclear chemistry.

Geometry

In high school, Geometry was the subject I dreaded the most. Now, it is the subject that I tutor the most. My whole outlook on this course has changed and I have come to appreciate the order of the class. I can empathize with a student who feels lost and can help them make that same transition to seeing the beauty of Geometry, whether it is with angles, lines and triangles in first semester or surface areas, volumes, and circles in second semester.

Physics

I took a year of college Physics with labs. I help students better understand the motion of matter that occurs around them. We cover the topics of vectors, velocity, acceleration, force, momentum, gravity, light, sound, electricity, and magnetism.

Prealgebra

I help students develop the skills and strong foundation in Math that they will need during their high school years and beyond. I cover the introduction to variables, factoring, inequalities, graphing, and absolute values.

Precalculus

I help Precalculus students develop the strong fundamentals of Math that they are going to need in Calculus. I review the six Trigonometric functions and their graphs, logarithms, and conic sections. I also cover complex numbers and polar coordinates. Finally, I preview limits and derivatives that will form the basis of Calculus. Since some classes combine Precalculus and Trigonometry, please also review my Trigonometry subject description. At the college level, I am familiar with Math 2 at SMC.

Trigonometry

With Trigonometry, it is easy to feel like you're going in circles, but I can help students understand the order of the Unit Circle and what the six trigonometric functions (Sin, Cos, Tan, Sec, Csc, and Cot) mean. I also cover graphing functions of the form y=A func [B(x+c)] + D and how to interpret the graph. In addition, I review Law of Sines, Law of Cosine, half angle and double angle formulas, and Pythagorean Identities. Since some classes combine Precalculus and Trigonometry, please also review my Precalculus subject description.

Statistics

As a former AP Statistics student, I help students understand descriptive statistics (such as mean, median, standard deviation, least squares regression, and normal distributions) as well as statistical analysis (z-scores and z-tests, t-tests, confidence intervals, Chi-square tests, and ANOVA). I also cover planning and interpreting surveys, studies, and experiments; and probabilities of independent and dependent events. At the college level, I'm familiar with Math 54 at SMC and Math 150 at El Camino.

Geography

No matter if it's Burundi or Brunei, Swaziland or Switzerland, Chile or China, I help students understand the geography of the world that surrounds them. Students will be familiar with the countries, capitals, cities, physical features, and bodies of water presented on any map or atlas.

Government & Politics

I assist senior students in understanding how their government is organized and how it operates. I cover the Legislative, Judicial, and Executive branches of government at the federal, state, and local levels. I also cover political processes like voting and running for office.

GED

No matter what situations or circumstances have led a student to taking the GED, I help prepare them to pass all 5 sections so that they can move on with their educational and vocational goals.

Elementary (K-6th)

I volunteer at Mar Vista Gardens Recreation Center with the after-school program and tutor elementary-age children there. I also volunteer with School on Wheels helping homeless children with their homework.

ASVAB

I was raised in Oceanside, CA, home to Camp Pendleton and the Marines. I am familiar with the ASVAB test and the practice material provided by the government. I am interested in assisting young men and women prepare and pass this test to start their military careers.

Organic Chemistry

At UC Irvine, I took a year of Organic Chemistry with labs. I assist students in the areas of organic nomenclature, functional groups and their reactions, reaction mechanisms, synthesis, stereochemistry, mass spectrometry, aromatic compounds, carbohydrates, amino acids and proteins. I am familiar with Chemistry 211/212 at West LA and Chemistry 2200/3200 at CSULA.

PSAT

For the last several years, I have tutored and assisted students in preparing for the SAT. I am certified by Wyzant in both the Math and Reading portions of that test. A natural extension of that is to prepare students for the PSAT by not only reviewing the test substance but also by familiarizing them with the test format and teaching them test taking strategy that they will need later for the SAT.
