Reading

Reading and other study skills are my true specialty-areas. I relish the effort to help students improve not just a score or a grade, not just a piece of information or bit of knowledge, but to help them improve their ability to gain and maintain scores and grades, information and knowledge. That's what the teaching process is all about: Helping students learn how to learn for themselves.

Writing

I have over fifteen years experience teaching writing to all levels: elementary, secondary, undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate. I served four years as the assistant editor for a publishing company, and I have served as a freelance writer and editor for over fifteen years. I studied linguistics and semiotics at university, and I have training in early child language development, including phonics and writing. I have worked extensively?with excellent results?with students who have learning difficulties such as dyslexia and ADD/ADHD.

English

English is one of my specialties. I have a degree in English, and I have taught English at various levels for over 10 years, including teaching at the college level.

The SAT is one of my specialties. I have been working with students to prepare for the SAT and similar tests for nearly 10 years. I am capable of helping your student in all areas of the SAT. Phonics

In college, linguistics and semiotics were areas of interest, and I spent a great deal of time studying and researching in these areas. I have worked with students of varying ages for over a decade to help them develop their reading skills, including phonics. I am also certified in the Project Read Program by Language Circle.

Study Skills

Ultimately, education is a learning endeavor, not a teaching endeavor. Students must be ready, willing, and able to learn. If they are not, good teaching will do nothing for them. Studying the ?right? subjects will do nothing for them. The only thing that will help them is to apply themselves to what they are studying. Or to put it another way: They must study. The word student itself implies personal initiative in the education process. Not all people who attend school are students, strictly speaking. Some of them might better be called ?attendees.? They come to class, but little more. The role of the teacher in education is to understand, communicate, motivate, facilitate, and inspire. It begins with understanding. The teacher enters the classroom full of students, some eager, some not. He must first take in and understand the members of his class. The old adage applies here as well as anywhere: ?Seek first to understand, then to be understood.? The teacher who never understands his or her students will never truly be able to teach them. The sooner the teacher understands each student, the sooner each student will begin to learn, and therefore, the more and better each will learn. A large part of understanding students is being able to see where they are in their understanding of the subject at hand. As a teacher and tutor, my goal when teaching study skills is to help students in three fundamental areas, based on (1) their current level of ability and (2) their current need. The three areas are (a) Reading, (b) Reasoning, and (c) Rendering. These three areas can collectively be called studying, and each of the three areas has techniques associated with it that, when learned and applied properly, make the whole of studying more effective. The three areas are, of course, overlapping and recursive processes. We go through each of them again and again throughout a course of study. My study skills course is in three sections, one related to each of the three areas of study skills. The first includes reading comprehension, speed reading, note taking, organization, filing, outlining, and review. The second helps students think more clearly, more effectively, and ultimately, more productively. It combines an overview of the principles of effective thought with real-world applications that students can use in everyday life. The workshop will include elements of decision-making, logical analysis, effective memorization, improved reading comprehension, and more. The third guides students through the entire writing process and helps them gain the skills necessary to write just about anything. Understanding and mastering the writing process is an important element for success in any school subject. Classes will include the three elements of the writing process, research sources and methods, how to read better in order to write better, editing and rewriting, writing for fun, the importance of taking breaks, and more.
