I graduate from California State University Northridge in Liberal Studies. I have a California State Teaching Credential. While studying for my degree and credential, I had the chance to work with very good teachers and work as a student teacher in their classrooms. I had the opportunity to work with elementary school students and familiarize myself with curriculum taught in elementary school. I enjoy working with children and in the past two years I've worked one-on-one with elementary education students.
As an elementary school teacher working with first graders I learned how to teach phonics to children. I learned how it's done in schools and the way the teachers teach phonics in classrooms using the OCR. Students learn the sound each letter makes first and then they learn to combine them with different sounds to make a word. For example a-e makes an /ey/ sound. Also as a linguistics/TESL major student I learned how to teach phonics and phonetics to adults. I have taken courses in teaching phonics to elementary school students, as well as phonetics in order to better understand the sounds of English language and be able to teach them to adults and children.
Being a student for many years, as well a teacher and a tutor for 6 years, I've learned different studying styles and skills which have helped me as a university student to get my Bachelor's as well as my MA degree. Note taking, highlighting, and reading out-laud are some of the skills which can help a student to be able to better study and understand the subject matter.
I'm currently studying Linguistics/Teaching ESL. Having been an ESL student myself, I have great empathy for ESL students. I am currently studying how to teach to Non-native speakers of English pronunciation, grammar and syntax, and reading and writing. Throughout the two years I've been a graduate student of Linguistics/TESL, I have had the opportunity to observe ESL classrooms and attend lectures and workshops where I learned how to use and apply what I've been studying in classroom. I enjoy working with ESL students and like to help them in anyway possible.
In order to receive my degree and my CA Teaching Credential I had to take the CBEST exam and pass it. I took the exam two times and passed the second time. As a result I know what works and what does not work, when studying for CBEST. Since I passed my CBEST exam I have helped my other fellow teachers to take the exam and pass the test to receive their teaching credential. I am familiar with the subjects and the topics covered in the exam.
Throughout my BA and MA studies, I've taken ASL classes. I am very much interested in Deaf culture and American Sign Language. I minored in ASL for my BA degree but continues to take classes and improve my knowledge and skill of ASL throughout my MA years in university.
