I have been a very active tutor in excellent standing with WyzAnt (see my ratings and reviews) and I always include study skills as part of my tutoring, regardless of subject; skills such as how to focus, time management, recitation, using index cards, using the internet, as well as planning and organization. I not only teach these skills as part of my "subject" tutoring, but in my work with students preparing for exams, such as the SHSAT or ASVAB, I emphasize study skills even more, since usually the amount of study time before the exam is limited.
For a year, I was a substitute para-professional with the NYC Dept. of Education, District 75, working with children on the severe end of the autistic spectrum. For 7 years, I worked as a case manager, outreach worker, and supervisor at the Hetrick-Martin Institute, providing services to runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth Currently, I am privately tutoring a special needs child in piano. I am extremely patient and empathetic, and get along great with all kids, especially it seems, those with special needs. I am glad to provide more detailed information and/or documentation if required. Thank you.
I am qualified to tutor in college counseling because I have significant experience in this area. As a Case Manager for the Hetrick-Martin Institute, I met with adolescents both individually and in a group setting to help them devise an educational/vocational plan. This included researching various careers, aptitude testing, creating a strong personal essay, and teaching them how to effectively research various colleges to suit their needs.
I have been tutoring students for Regents exams for several years now. The student I am currently tutoring for English Regents is very happy with her son's progress, and even said that this is the first time he seems to be enjoying studying. I am also quite familiar with the new "Common Core" curriculum for Regents exams. As for materials, I use a combination of the Barron's Regents book and on-line resources, and I give simulated exams 1 - 2 weeks before the actual test and grade them to ensure that my students perform well.
I am extremely familiar and experienced with tutoring the common core curricula in both ELA and math to elementary school and middle school students. Since September 2010 (for over 4 years now), I have been a WyzAnt tutor with consistently exceptional ratings and reviews. As soon as the common core curricula was fully implemented in the NYC school system in 2011, I familiarized myself with both the math and ELA topics and lessons. Every elementary school student I have tutored since 2011 in ELA and math was common core material, since common core has been required throughout the state. I have used a variety of books and materials for common core practice, including and especially the "Ready New York" series and the Engage NY Common Core website.
I am an experienced tutor and would be glad to help your 17 year olds.
