I have an undergraduate degree in English / Education grades 7 - 12. I also have a Masters Degree in ESL. I have many years experience teaching both English and ESL.
Teaching ESL has always been my passion. From the very beginning I started working with 5 year old children from various countries who had just moved to the United States. These children had very little, if no exposure to speaking or hearing English. We started with color photos of items, and showed the kids the written word at the same time. Within a week the kids associated the word with the photo and were able to say the words correctly! At SUNY Stonybrook I was a volunteer tutor at the University Writing center and had the opportunity to tutor a Korean man who was a published professor in his country. He was a professional man who needed help proof-reading his English work, and he was so appreciative and thankful for my help. I asked for permission to do a "mini thesis" during my undergraduate studies at SUNY Stonybrook on how to teach writing to ESL students. Along with doing the paper, I acted as a "volunteer" teaching assistant for the course that trained the writing center tutors. I look forward to working with ESL students at any level, and welcome any questions about my prior experience in this area.
