As a teacher, writer, editor, and speech teacher, I can help you learn the nuances of connotation and denotation, the selection of the right word, and the building of your vocabulary. Whether you are a native speaker or an international, growing your word bank and being able to use the right term or phrase or idiom for the right message is key to success and confidence.


Grammar

Whatever your reasons for wanting or needing to learn grammar, I will help you find a way to not just learn the rules, but, more importantly, learn how to use and apply proper grammar. As a long time high school and college teacher, including communications, English, and ESL, I have lots of materials to make this task more enjoyable.

Writing

I am a published, professional writer. In addition, I have taught all levels and varieties of writing (technical, business, literature, thesis work, etc). With years as a high school teacher of English as well as a college lecturer in Oral Interpretation of Literature as well as Literature for International Students, I will help you work on the areas you struggle with, give you an easy recipe for writing essays, and, with any luck, teach you to like (if not love) the material you are reading.

TOEFL


Phonics

Phonics, or phonetics, is the practice of sounds. How a sound is produced. This is often, in English, not the way it is spelled - or how you THINK a word should be produced. The articulators help you shape the sound as the air escapes your mouth and nose. NOTE: I am not a licensed speech therapist.


Study Skills

Where do I start? How do I manage it? What is the order I should do it in. Why don't I have motivation? These are frequent obstacles of students when they are having difficulties studying or learning. As a former high school teacher, college professor, and writer who has bumped up against many deadlines, help my clients work on figuring out the answers for THEM for the questions. I have had significant recent success with Realtor exams, flight attendant training, and interview prep. It's your life - don't let a test be your obstacle! Studying has both universal and individual needs and components. I will work with you in figuring out what works best for you to achieve your studying, writing, learning goals.


Theater

In addition to having a BS in Secondary Education - Comprehensive English including Speech and Theater course work, and a Masters in Speech Communication, I am an accent reduction specialist and performance artist. I recently authored the Instructor's Manual for the Voice and Articulation text used in most colleges. As an experienced curriculum writer, I have skills in creating individual plans for successful learning. As a 20+ year teacher, my students have been as young as a 5year old from Saudi Arabia, through to adult refugees, internationals working to get accepted to graduate programs, actresses working on parts, and business professionals working on getting promotions. I can work with students on the literature side of theatre studies as well as the technical or performance aspects.


ESL/ESOL

In addition to having a TESOL certificate, I have BS in Secondary English including ESL course work, and a Masters in Speech Communication, and am an accent reduction specialist. My expertise in college counseling comes from years as a communications professor as well as a career in foreign exchange as a counselor (for families, schools, and students). Often, I work with clients on their personal statements for colleges, their requests for references, as well as answering questions in application packets.

As a technical writer and professor, I have not only used Outlook in my daily life, but have taught it many times at various schools including Wentworth Institute of Technology. In my professional business communications courses, I teach how to manage email which has a section on use of Outlook for creating folder, labels, and signatures.


Speech
