Toni, a tutor equally at home in Humanities and Sciences.

Not so long ago the goal of education was to shape the thinking of younger generations so that, with solid background knowledge, they could, in turn, add wisdom to the common store. Since reasoning, interpretative, and problem solving skills are needed across the spectrum, different disciplines were interwoven and 'classics' -that is, the common pool of knowledge that had proved valuable and fertile over time- highly respected and heavily studied. All that has changed, in a misguided effort ... [more]

Elementary (K-6th)

K through 6th tutoring includes subjects for which I have already qualified. Contrarily to the 'politically correct' credo, I believe that in order to teach a subject you need to know the subject, not the latest methodological trend. Thus, although it is true in general that an Elementary School teacher cannot teach College courses because of lack of expertise, a University professor can certainly teach High, Junior High, and Elementary School. As a matter of fact, the advanced knowledge of his/her proper subject as well as general knowledge (after all in order to obtain a Ph. D. one has to go through the Master, Bachelor,...) can only improve the quality of instruction given. As for methods, if any of the fads that have been and are still plaguing our schools (elementary and not) had been successful, nobody would need tutors. After homeschooling my daughter, teaching for over 20 years at universities, tutoring elementary through college kids, I believe that I'm well qualified to take on the 5 to 11 group.

Regents

Over the past few years I have prepared numerous students to successfully take these exams. What I like about these tests is that they are knowledge based -more so in the old days than now- and the score is given as percentage. Of course, some subjectivity is to be espected in the 'soft' subjects that require free writing, but the scoring guidelines for the written parts are relatively thight so as to insure fairness. I very much enjoy being able to first assess and then resolve the problems any given student is facing in being successful. I cannot, of course, guaranty a 100%, but if you work with me you can be sure that you'll get results.
