Elementary (K-6th)

Mastering education basics opens the doors to endless possibilities and is critical to becoming an enthusiastic lifelong learner. For the past five years, I have worked extensively with elementary school students, tutoring all subjects. My students reflect a wide range of abilities, goals and learning styles. Some students want to become better spellers; others, to understand math; and still others, to learn to read. I have worked and had success with them all. My credentials include an undergraduate teaching certification, graduate work in reading and a full SEI (structured English immersion) endorsement. My individualized approach is based on the student?s preferred learning style. So many of my students find that, for the first time, they aren?t simply trying to memorize; they actually understand. Together, we have opened doors previously closed to them.

ESL/ESOL

Do you want to speak English more fluently? Do you need practice hearing a native English speaker so that you can better understand the spoken word? Do you want to untangle the challenges of English grammar - with its many rules and exceptions? Do you want to read and write English better? Regardless of your goal, I can help you to reach it - while making learning fun, engaging and practical. In the past four years, I have worked extensively with English language learners with various skills levels and goals. I also lived in Japan for a year and taught English to preschoolers and to adults, and every age in between. I am a native English speaker with exceptional communication skills and command of grammar. In addition, I have earned my ESL endorsement from the Arizona Department of Education.

Business

My 25+ year career in business was characterized by success and effectiveness in increasingly responsible positions. I have experience in a number of industries including but not limited to banking, insurance and consulting. My experience includes managerial positions and leadership roles. In 2000, I earned my MBA from Arizona State University.

College Counseling

My academic coursework, my self-study, and my professional experience have provided me with a wealth of knowledge related to college counseling. I have completed graduate work in counseling. Given the potential importance of college to an individual's life experiences, I have spent a considerable amount of time studying the college selection process and interviewed numerous college admissions officers. I have applied the results of this self-study to guiding high school students and returning adults to making sound selections regarding college. Without exception, my students report that the college they selected, with my guidance, proved to be a great match.

Sociology

What are the causes of deviant behavior? What are the consequences of racial and gender identity? These are but two of the myriad of questions that sociology explores and that I examined as an undergraduate minoring in sociology. In more recent years, I have taught sociology at the community college level, and continue to study sociology independently.

Criminal Justice

My academic background, my professional work, and my tutoring include criminal justice courses and experience. As a prelaw major, I took a number of criminal justice courses from an introduction to the criminal justice system to the philosophy of incarceration to legal precedents. Professionally, I worked in the state Department of Corrections for more than 15 years. In that capacity, I provided training at the Correctional Officer Training Academy (COTA) to newly-hired correctional officers. The training covered a wide range of topics. More recently, I have tutored individuals preparing to take exams qualifying them for promotional opportunities within the criminal justice system.
