I taught algebra 1 and prealgebra for a number of years in a Minneapolis charter high school. It was great fun helping students move from memorizing operations to understanding how numbers work together. I have lots of tricks and tips to help speed up that understanding. It is very satisfying to see students light up when things start to make sense!

I grew up in a musical family and had piano and other lessons as a child; in high school I read everything I could about the relationship between music and math. I studied piano as an adult as well. I have given piano lessons since the 1960s, and have studied piano pedagogy on my own. Teaching is a beautiful experience for me. I work with each individual according to their needs and experience. I postpone learning to read music for a number of lessons; I prefer to first lay a foundation of rhythm and ear training. This cultivates the fundamentals of musical understanding in students. I help students to develop listening skills, make their own instruments, and write their own songs.
I have given piano lessons to children and adults since 1967. I use a variety of beginning instruction books (Bastien, Chester, etc.) plus Bartok's Mikrokosmos as a wonderful teaching tool. I have developed teaching aids that help students learn to read music and create their own music. I work with parents and students about effective practicing between lessons. Students learn how to look at a piece of music before playing it, to see what they can glean from what is on the page. I use a variety of methods to instill a sense of rhythm, and to enhance students' enjoyment of music. My goal is that students play with heart as well as understanding.
