I was an elementary teacher for 11 years - teaching K - 8 all subjects and special education. I have specialized training in reading, language arts and social studies. I hold a B.S. in Elementary and Special Education and an M.Ed. in Educational Administration. For the last seven years, I have been training elementary teachers in the most effective strategies to use in their classrooms. I believe in differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all students. I use on-going assessment to make sure my students are strengthening their weakest areas so that they can achieve success.
For four years I was the Assistant Director of Reading First in Ohio. I developed training and trained teachers in how to teach all areas of reading, specifically phonics. I was on the PRAXIS National Reading Specialist Committee. In that role, I helped to develop the test questions for teachers to become reading specialists. I have taught elementary grades which involved teaching phonics for 12 years. I teach at Kennesaw State Univ. and instruct my students on how to teach phonics, especially academic vocabulary.
I have been a teacher for over 30 years and have taught study skills in each year that I taught. I was the lead teacher for a summer camp in Ohio on study skills and test preparation. I taught 20 6 - 8 graders for three summers in this area specifically. I designed a program for 4 - 8 graders for the NAACP on leadership, careers, and study skills. When I tutor a student, I always teach study skills as that is part of the issue. Helping students get organized, learning how to read a textbook, taking notes, and studying for a test are part of my regular tutoring.
I passed the Educational Leadership Praxis with a score of 670; 150 points higher than required in Georgia. I served on the Praxis National Reading Specialist Committee to develop the core components of the Praxis and then developed test questions for the reading specialist test.
As a published writer and contributor to a teaching magazine, I understand how to write in order to capture my audience's attention, succinctly present the key points, and then summarize with a call to action. These skills are critical to effective speech writing.
