Microsoft Excel

I was IT leader for the Trumbull Public Schools for 14 years. In that position, I created numerous spreadsheets for a variety functions - Work Orders, Time Sheets, Grade Books and more. In addition, I worked with both teachers and students teaching how to create charts, formulas, conditional formatting and more. Excel, one part of the MS Office suite, is a spreadsheet application. The main function for spreadsheets is to perform mathematical formulas. Excel is a powerful spreadsheet that can simplify tasks involving math. From home budgets, time sheets to teacher grade books, formulas can be created and formatted to automate tasks. In addition, Excel can be used as a simple database and create pivot tables and charts.


General Computer

I have been using both Mac and PC computers since the 1980's. As IT Leader for the Trumbull Public Schools, I taught computers to both youth and adults for about 14 years. Adults especially can be apprehensive learning new technology. I have run workshops for adults from computer basics to software applications. The two main platforms for today's computers is Mac and PC. Each offers an operating system rich in utilities that can assist the user in performing every day tasks. I can help people understand their operating system as well as select the appropriate software to accomplish necessary tasks.


Microsoft Word

Word processing is not the same as typing on a typewriter. If you are still using 2 spaces after punctuation, using all caps, or underlining important items, then you need to learn about Word Processing! Microsoft Word is a word processing program. The newer versions have set defaults that can cause frustration. In addition, Word has advanced features that can customized for personal use - auto correct, macros. Inserting graphics can be frustration in Word. Learn about inline and independent graphics as well as text wrapping, resizing and cropping. Information and charts can be embedded in Word, and linked for live updating. I can teach you the basics of word processing, as well as the features of MS Word to make your print document look the way you need it to!


Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint or PowerPointless? How can this visual program enhance your presentation? PowerPoint can add sounds and animation - but should you? This is one of the overused, misused program on the market. I can help you understand the features of PowerPoint, create and use master slides, plus learn good PowerPoint techniques to enhance not hurt your presentation!


HTML

HTML - Hypertext Markup Language - is the underlying language used for websites. There are rules that are governed by the World Wide Web consortium. Today's HTML pages also make use of Cascading Style Sheets - CSS. I have been teaching HTML since the late 1990's, addressing web browser issues, ADA compliance and graphic creation.


Adobe Illustrator

I have a Computer Education degree from Fairfield University and have actively taught computer programs since 1997. In addition, I have been editor for many publications - Connecticut's "Celebration in Excellence", National Pastoral Musicians convention booklet, Trumbull High School's Yearbook to name a few. I was IT leader for the Trumbull Public Schools for 12 years. In that role I have both created graphics and logos in Illustrator as well as taught students how to use Illustrator. Illustrator is a graphic program used to create designs for printed publications.


Web Design

I am an active web designer. I have been designing websites since 1998. In addition, I have taught website design since 2003, working with both students and adults.


Adobe Photoshop

I have used and taught Photoshop for more than 20 years. As a graphics editor for the State's "Celebration of Excellence" booklet, I used photoshop to correct many of the photos posted in the book. As yearbook advisor, I taught students to use Photoshop to create effects and graphics for the award winning Trumbull HS Yearbook.


Adobe InDesign

I have used InDesign since it was PageMaker. I have used InDesign to create a variety of publications - yearbooks, conference books, church bulletins and other publications that were ultimately sent to a printer. In addition, I have taught others how to use InDesign and prepare documents for publication.


Desktop Publishing

I have been active in Desktop Publishing producing documents for major organizations. For several years, I was the creator for the "Celebration of Excellence" book for the State Dept of Education in Connecticut (this program is no longer active). I created the convention booklet for NPM (Nation Pastoral Musicians) for the 2006 convention. I assisted the High school where I taught in producing their award winning yearbook. I have used PageMaker and now InDesign. I have taught both teachers and students not only how to use the program, but the accepted practices in desktop publishing.


Dreamweaver

Dreamweaver is the industry standard for creating WYSIWYG websites. I have created many websites using Dreamweaver. The latest version uses AJAX, CSS, Spry Widgets and more. Websites need to keep current with the WW3 standards and compliances. I am able to create and edit in both the design and code views, adding Javascripts, forms and more. I have been using Dreamweaver since its inception, switching from GoLive.


Macintosh

I have been working on Mac computers since they first came out. I have the added advantage of having taught on both the Mac & PC, so I understand the similarities and differences.


Microsoft Outlook

As part of my IT leader duties in the public schools, I was responsible for running workshops for teachers on how to use Outlook. Managing contacts, organizing emails, creating poles, recovering deleted items, sharing calendars and more.


Microsoft Windows

I have taught Information Processing on windows based computers for over 14 years. I started with Windows 95 and have progressed through the updates to Windows 7. I taught students about windows, minimize, maximize, screen shots, creating folders, saving documents, document extensions and much more.


Microsoft Publisher

Microsoft Publisher is part of the Office suite that many people use to publish newsletters, brochures and flyers. I have been teaching Publisher to youth and adults for over 12 years. I can teach students how to use Publisher for school projects, create flyers, brochures, banners and much more!


CSS

CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, is the code the web uses to format and place text, objects and elements in a website. Knowing how to write this code and where to place it - in a web page, in a line of code or on a separate sheet is key to having it control a web page. I have been designing webpages for almost 20 years. CSS has been a integral part of web design for over 10 years. I have been successfully tutoring students on web design & CSS through WyzAnt for several years now. One cannot be qualified to teach Dreamweaver and Web Design without also being qualified in CSS, it is that important to website construction!
