I have a diverse background in areas related to Electrical Engineering and currently teach full time in the field. I provided my services both to those already out of school who are looking to extend their skills as well as those in school looking for help with their coursework. My clients include those who have been exposed to various topics but may not have had a structured way to learn or improve those skills. I cover a broad range of electrical and computer systems engineering topics from... [more]
While many Excel users are able to enter and use simple formulas, Excel has a much greater capability! I can help you generate charts/graphs, use Excel to organize data and for simple statistics.
Although personal computers are 'everywhere' not everyone is comfortable using them or working on them! I can provide a refresher on how to get the most out of your PC, or help you getting one set up or moving files from an old computer to a new one. I can also do upgrades for you, adding or replacing a hard rive or memory or a video card. I can provide help with installing, setting up or using your software. Why wait?
From simple formatting to leveraging Word's more powerful features, I can help! I've been a Word user since it was first introduced. Many users have been frustrated as they jump from version to version. I can help you overcome those issues and help you become a more productive Word user.
PowerPoint can be both a wonderful and a frustrating tool! Many users simply create plain text slides that could be greatly improved with a few "extras". Others may create slides with too many extras, which takes away from the message. I can teach you to find a balance between the extremes. I can also teach you how to find and use these extras like graphics, themes, charts/graphs and much more! I've been a PowerPoint user since it was first introduced. I work with students on public speaking as well as their preparation of PowerPoint slides.
I have developed java code for web pages and worked with students developing large applications in java. For teaching purposes, java is often selected because it can be easy for students to grasp basic programming principles without getting bogged down in the language syntax. Some of the program development tools - such as Eclipse - can be challenging to understand without hands on support.
I have experience with many web based technologies including HTML, PHP, JAVA, Ruby and others. Using HTML I have built or modified a number of personal and client websites. I have created pages with static and dynamic content. Using the HTML syntax I have extended websites built using Content Management Systems by adding either formatting enhancements or static content pages. Some of my HTML sites end up involving the other web technologies as well, such as linking in PHP pages or including JAVA code. I have used a number of tools for working with HTML on both Linux and Windows. On the Windows platform I primarily use Dreamweaver for editing web pages. On Linux I use several different tools depending on the Linux distribution. I can help students work through problems in existing HTML web pages or help them create their first web pages. For those looking to publish their work online, I can teach them how to use the tools needed to move files between their computer and their web host.
Database users often face a number of challenges, from modeling the data to successfully retrieving it from an existing database. If you are new to creating and using databases, I can help you get started!
Study skills typically include time management, organization and long term planning though not necessarily in a specific subject. As an engineering manager at General Electric my responsibilities included all of these for a multimillion dollar business segment and for multiple individual projects valued at over $1M each. I coached and assisted my staff in all of these areas to help make both the projects and the individuals successful. As a college teacher in an engineering program, my courses include a professional development aspect. I work directly with the students to provide coaching on these projects. Our work is results-oriented and the students design and build an engineering project. They are required to develop their full semester project plan and to manage their time to that plan. I also provide coaching on engineering subjects and teach them the additional study skills they need to research and learn new material and to reinforce material they have already covered.
My consulting practice includes the creation and maintenance of client websites as well as my own websites for my photography and consulting businesses. In my teaching role, I developed a web based collaborative tool that is now used by approximately 200 students and 50 faculty/staff/industry sponsors each semester. I have worked with most of the common web technologies including PHP, Ruby on Rails, Java and HTML and have linked some of these to MySQL databases as needed.
As a professional photographer for 10 years, I have only shot digitally. I start with digital images and, using Photoshop, perform both artistic and corrective adjustments to my photos. All of my wedding albums are collage style books created with Photoshop.
I currently use QuickBooks to manage my own businesses. Additionally, I helped setup QuickBooks for a local student run organization with approximately 40 members and an annual budget of over $100,000.
I have participated in or managed computer engineering projects since 1979. Large scale projects include the complete factory automation systems that produced the Saturn cars and the Nissan Altima, pickup trucks and Sentra. My experience includes both hardware and software architecture of single and multi-computer networks. I have and continue to write code and am often involved in system debugging. My current students work with all of the current computer languages including C/C++/Java/Ruby/PHP and more. I have taught them data structures, data manipulation, user interface design, programming techniques, communications and other core computing technologies.

I have a diverse background in areas related to Electrical Engineering and currently teach full time in the field. I have participated in or managed computer science and engineering projects since 1979. My experience includes both hardware and software architecture of single and multi-computer networks. I have and continue to write code and am often involved in system debugging. I currently teach and mentor students full time at the college level in a variety of computer programming languages including Java, Perl, C++, Matlab, HTML, and Ruby. We work with data structures, object oriented programming, databases, algorithm development and testing / implementation challenges.
I have worked with several generations of multiple distributions of Linux including Red Hat, SUSE and Ubuntu. I have done system installations on both physical and virtual machines for both single and multi-user applications. I originally learned and used the UNIX platform in the 1980s on which Linux is based. At school I regularly teach students both beginning and intermediate Linux skills and work with advanced students on specific problem solving for their projects.
I have been working with databases for over 20 years, including Oracle, Microsoft SQL, MySQL, Ingress, and Microsoft Access and several others. Using Access, I have created and maintained databases for mailing lists, financial management general purpose record keeping, and similar applications. I can provide support for designing the database, defining and modeling relationships between table and for developing queries to retrieve the appropriate data. I can develop forms to help present the data in a meaningful manner. I can help you produce reports to summarize data in various ways. I can also show you how to fetch data from your Access database to Excel or to Word and to create mailing lists or address labels from your data. I find that Access is one of the Microsoft Office packages where users frequently need assistance to move past their initial usage. The package itself can be very complicated to use and many users are not very familiar with database applications - making this especially challenging.
I have used Outlook since the late 1990s in both standalone and coupled to a corporate Exchange Server. I have made productive use of many of its features including the tasks, calendar and notes features. I have also used the rules capabilities to increase productivity.
I have worked with and/or debugged multiple web applications written in PHP. While PHP has its own syntax, it shares many commonalities with other programming languages. By looking for and leveraging those constructs I'm able to work with others looking to use or learn about the language.
I first used the UNIX operating system for software development in the early 80's. My company worked with the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University on an artificial intelligence application implemented on a VAX 11/780. I have used UNIX on/off over the years with my most recent experience on the Linux implementations of the operating system. UNIX commands, in general, have been migrated to the Linux world such that all Linux experience is directly applicable to the UNIX platforms. At the college level, I currently teach Linux/UNIX programming including both operating system commands and multiple programming languages including Java, C, C++, Ruby on Rails, PHP, and more.
Having earned my amateur radio license as a teenager, I have always been interested in electrical and electronics projects. With both a BS and ME in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, I have worked at both Westinghouse and General Electric as an electrical engineer. I have worked on projects that included system interfacing, controls, automation, vision systems, robotics, programmable controls and more.

Microsoft Project is one of several project management tools that I have used over the last 20 years. Being able to assist with Microsoft Project generally requires two skills - how to use the software itself and how to manage projects. As a manager, I have been responsible for multimillion dollar projects where we have used Microsoft Project or similar tools to keep track of project details. I have taught the use of both Microsoft Project and other tools to both college students and industry personnel.
